Bong Joon-ho Talks About His Sci-Fi Project Transperceneige

Although I've only ever seen one of Korean director Bong Joon-ho's films, I'm interested in his work, as I think he's quite a talented filmmaker. He did direct one of the three segments in Tokyo, but we haven't otherwise seen anything from him since The Host arrived in 2006. Our friends at Collider got a chance to talk with Bong Joon-ho recently and got an update on his currently in-production film titled Mother as well as another project he has in the works. Bong Joon-ho said that he's adapting a French sci-fi novel called Transperceneige about the "dystopia vision regarding the future of humanity and human nature."
Apparently it was announced way back in 2006 (via Twitch) that Joon-ho would adapt Transperceneige, but this is the first update since then. Joon-ho told Collider that, "Once Mother is done, I will be writing the script for [Transperceneige]. I would like the film to be finished by 2011 or 2012." He also adds that, "Transperceneige will be a multi-language, international co-production but ultimately a Korean film." And the reason for that, is that Joon-ho likes to have 100% creative control and the ability to make the final cuts. But as we know, that's not something found often in Hollywood, especially for a Korean director.
I did some quick research and found that Transperceneige is actually a graphic novel set on a train that is the last refuge for human civilization on the run from a devastating ice age. "The train is a microcosm of human society with its different classes of passenger mirroring different political and social strata." It actually sounds quite fascinating and I'd love to see Bong Joon-ho's take on that story. As for that other project Mother, Joon-ho explains: "It's a crime genre. But ultimately it's a story about a strange mother and son. I wanted to express the explosive madness of a mother trying to save her wrongly accused son."

Memories of Murder is a absolutely fantastic film. You definitely need to check it out. In a lot of ways it is far superior to The Host. He's a great director, I expect great things from him!

The Host was fantastically made and layered with unique themes. Anything Bong Joon-ho directs I'm automatically interested.
