Pixar's Up to Open the 62nd Cannes Film Festival
March 19, 2009
by Alex Billington
Disney has announced today that Pixar's Up will premiere in Digital 3D as the opening night movie at this year's 62nd Cannes Film Festival. This is the first time ever that either a Disney feature or an animated film have opened the prestigious festival. Disney's Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter said: "We are absolutely thrilled that the Cannes Film Festival has chosen Up to be its prestigious opening night offering. This is a huge step for animation, and further supports our belief that a great animated film is simply a great film." The festival opens on Wednesday, May 13th and lasts for 11 days until Sunday, May 24th.
I just received confirmation this week that I've been approved as press and will be attending Cannes. And I can't tell you how excited I am to know that Pixar's Up will be headlining the festival. Up is only the 10th animated film to ever show at Cannes. It joins the ranks of Dumbo, The Fantastic Planet, Fritz the Cat, Shrek, The Triplets of Belleville, Shrek 2, Over the Hedge, Kung Fu Panda, and Waltz With Bashir. I'm actually amazed that this is the first time a Pixar movie has ever shown at Cannes, but who knows, maybe this is the first year they tried to get in. Stay tuned for more Cannes news over the next few months.
