Despereaux's Sam Fell Helming Demonkeeper Adaptation
March 20, 2009
by Alex Billington
Sam Fell is the latest to join Kevin Munroe (TMNT) and Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!) as directors who have since signed on to direct live-action feature films after first directing an animated film. Fell, who directed both The Tale of Despereaux and Flushed Away, is set to direct an adaptation of Royce Buckingham's novel Demonkeeper for Fox 2000. The story follows a Seattle teen who inherits caretaker responsibilities for a house filled with demons. When he finally breaks free of a date, he returns to discover that kids have broken into the house, unleashing its most vicious demon, the Beast, Killer of Lost Children.
As cool as that concept sounds, it's actually a comedic children's book. The screenplay is being written by Laeta Kalogridis, who wrote the scripts for the upcoming Martin Scorsese-directed Shutter Island as well as Battle Angel for James Cameron to direct. Fell doesn't have any other gigs lined up at the moment, so we can expect him to start work on Demonkeeper fairly soon. The book was first released in 2006 and has received fairly positive ratings on Amazon. Although I don't expect to ever read the book, this is still a project I'll keep my eye on, just because it seems cool and could be fun, like Monster House in a way.

It should have been a classic live action movies in the time when Gremlins was released with the classic make up and these robotic designed monsters and a nice touch of Sam Winston's effects.

I agree Fisherr. I'm becoming tired with the constant CG stuff of today no matter how good it has gotten here and there. I like CG over props/animatronics.
