Bryan Singer Circling New Regency's Freedom Formula
March 23, 2009
by Alex Billington
Fox and New Regency are developing an adaptation of the comic book series "Freedom Formula: Ghost of the Wasteland." Newcomer Michael Finch, who sold his first script Medieval for six figures a few weeks ago, will write the screenplay for Freedom Formula, while Bryan Singer is being eyed as director. Radical Publishing, who prints the series, teamed up with Singer last year at Comic-Con. The futuristic comic series is about pilots who battle in racing exo-suits called Vicious Cycles (VXs). One of the young racers, Zee, is a genetically engineered racer who learns his bloodline has the power to change society.
"Mike Finch came up with an incredible take that goes deeper into the mythology of the source material," said Radical's president Barry Levine. As much as I absolutely love X-Men 2, I'm not exactly anxious to see Bryan Singer get back to the comic book genre. In fact, I'd love to see him direct The Prisoners, the revenge project with Mark Wahlberg attached, first, then potentially direct Freedom Formula afterward, although I'm nervous about Fox handling this. I'll be looking into this comic series more this week, as this is the first I've heard of it, but it sounds pretty cool and I've got a feeling Singer could do a great job adapting it.

Sounds like another avenue to follow the upcoming anime-inspired flicks

I totally agree with you Alex. As much as I loved X-men 2, Superman Returns was a big let down for me. He should stick with The Prisoners.

This sounds like an action movie. I like Singer but that isn't really his strong suit. It makes me nervous for him. He should do something psychological instead. The Prisoners sounds like a better fit.

I am strongly reminded of IGPX. Anybody else?

Why couldn't Lex Luthor have had an exo-suit? Guess it had no "verisimilitude". Too bad "verisimilitude" requires there be no excitement or imagination in a film.
