Coen Brothers Finally Developing True Grit Western Next

We've heard it discussed before, but now the Coen Brothers will officially remake the 1969 western True Grit for their next feature film. Variety confirmed today that Joel and Ethan Coen are developing their version of True Grit, the iconic western that won John Wayne an Oscar, as their next project after they finish A Serious Man. The Coen's version will be less of a remake and more of a re-adaptation of Charles Portis' book that it's based on; they'll tell the story from the point of view of the protagonist 14-year-old girl rather than the lead actor as well. Oscar winning produce Scott Rudin is producing for Paramount.
True Grit tells the story of a drunken, hard-nosed U.S. Marshal and a Texas Ranger who help a stubborn young woman track down her father's murderer in hostile Indian territory. John Wayne won the Oscar for his role as the U.S. Marshall. The original is somewhat of a quintessential western and I can't wait to see the Coen Brothers finally jump into that genre as well. I really don't know if now is the right time, considering most recent westerns haven't done very well at the box office, but I know I'll be the first in line to see it when it comes out. How many others are excited to see the Coen Brothers finally make a western?

The Coen Brothers are my favorite, but I prefer when they do time periods in the early-mid 1900's, like Barton Fink or The Man Who Wasn't There

Why the hell does it always have to be remakes and reboots. The Duke nailed Rooster Cogburn, do we really need another? The Coen Brothers are immensely talented movie makers. Can't they come up with something original?

At least they're using the book, not the source movie. Remember "The Ladykillers"?
Anyway, I'd rather see the Coens write their own western, not based on anything we've seen. The Big Lebowski was actually technically a "western."
Would love to see a Hudsucker Proxy meets Tombstone.

There is a shred of originality, please don't say that, there are new and original movie that come out every year, but yes there are too many adaption and remakes going on for the moment.

I don't know about this. The orginal also had a brilliant cast as support. Robert Duvall and Hopper and Kim Darby made Big John an actual actor in this film, thus the Oscar. The cast will be crucial to the Brothers project. ( I know, ….I know. Glen Cambell was in it to sell tix back in the day, he had no value)
