Russell Crowe's State of Play Gets a Sharp New TV Spot

State of Play TV Spot

I'm featuring this new TV spot for State of Play today for a few reasons. First off, I'm actually quite excited to see this, and I want to give it some extra exposure. Secondly, we've only seen the trailer for State of Play so far, so it's good to see something new. And third, I just love the line from this: "Good reporters don't have friends, only sources." It's so true for a couple of colleagues I know. Anyway, give this a shot, as it could actually be pretty good. It's got a solid director, Kevin Macdonald of The Last King of Scotland, and a good screenwriter, Tony Gilroy of Michael Clayton, so maybe it's another sleeper hit in waiting?

Based on the BBC mini-series of the same title, a team of investigative reporters lead by Cal McAffrey (Russell Crowe) work alongside a police detective to try to solve the murder of a congressman's mistress.

State of Play is directed by Kevin Macdonald, of the Oscar winning documentary One Day in September as well as Touching the Void and The Last King of Scotland. The screenplay was co-written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom, Lions for Lambs), Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Ultimatum, Michael Clayton, upcoming Duplicity), and Billy Ray (Flightplan, Breach). The film is based on Paul Abbott's BBC mini-series of the same title from 2003. Universal will debut State of Play in theaters on April 17th.

if this film is half as good as the BBC series then it won't be time wasted for fans of political thrillers. Like the direction, like the writers, the cast is more than capable; Even though the adaptation will definitely truncate or excise most of what made the original so compelling, I've got faith there's something good here.

I agree with Ben Wilson, if it can even touch the level of the BBC mini-series this won't be a let-down, and from the little footage I've seen i definitely think this will be a very, very good film.

I have great anticipation for this movie. :D Never have doubt on Crowe who seems to give his ALL for every role he plays. It's Affleck that got me curious, playing with calibers like Crowe and Mirren. It'd be interesting. And no, I haven't seen the original BBC series.
