Natalie Portman in the Running for Marvel's Thor, Too?

Sif and Natalie Portman

Now here's an interesting bit of news to discuss. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood ran a story today addressing the recent Thor casting rumors. She confirms that Kenneth Branagh is looking at Alexander Skarsgard, who we mentioned a few days ago, as well as at least four other unknown actors for the role of Thor. The problem is they need some big names to actually sell this as a big summer tentpole movie. Well, there's Josh Hartnett, who IESB scooped last week and will probably play the evil villain Loki. But then Finke also mentions Natalie Portman, who she says "is in the lead for the female lead." Could it be?!

Bad Robot Producing World's Biggest Diamond Heist Movie

Bad Robot Producing World's Biggest Diamond Heist Movie

We wouldn't have thought twice about the news that Paramount was adapting "The Untold Story of the World's Biggest Diamond Heist" if it weren't for the name of the production company who is actually handling the development - Bad Robot. Yep, J.J. Abrams' company is in talks to develop an adaptation of Joshua Davis' article on Wired about Leonardo Notarbartolo, who was the leader of a group of Italian thieves that broke into and robbed the Antwerp Diamond Center. Production Weekly announced on their Twitter today that Bad Robot was involved, although this is the first time we've heard anything about it.

And Boom! Transformers 3 Gets a 2011 Release Date!

Transformers

Just days after Marvel announced that they had pushed back the release of Thor to 2011 and The Avengers to 2012, Paramount announces an official July 1st, 2011 release date for Michael Bay's Transformers 3. However, the studio is not confirming that Bay will be back or that this is even an indication that they're moving forward on a sequel (even though we know that this totally is a good indication). The first Transformers hit theaters on July 3rd of 2007, and the sequel is set to arrive this summer on June 24th. Paramount and Michael Bay are obviously keeping everything on a tight-knit two year schedule.

Must Watch: Sam Mendes' Away We Go Trailer

Away We Go Trailer

Focus Features has debuted the trailer for Sam Mendes' Away We Go starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. This is quirky romantic comedy follows a couple about to have a baby who travel around the US to find a perfect place to start their family. And as you can tell within the first few seconds, they're really going for the Juno vibe on this, with the hand-drawn title cards and quirky feel and everything. I'm not really sold though. It just doesn't look that great, like another Juno but without the originality anymore. Though I'll admit I was enjoying it until Allison Janney showed up. She really killed it for me, especially at the end.

Exclusive: Poster Premiere for Rupert Wyatt's The Escapist

Exclusive: Poster Premiere for Rupert Wyatt's The Escapist

IFC Films just sent over the official poster for The Escapist, the British prison escape film from Sundance last year that stars Brian Cox, Damian Lewis, and Joseph Fiennes. This incredible little indie deserves as much as love as it can get, as it's truly a fantastic film full of great performances. It's one of my favorite films of last year, although it's only just hitting theaters this upcoming April. Not only did it make my list of the 19 Best Movies That You Didn't See but I ranked it as my #1 favorite film from Sundance that year. So do yourself a favor, check out the official poster below, and also watch the trailer if you haven't seen it yet.

Chow Yun-Fat to Play Confucious in a Chinese Biopic

Chow Yun-Fat

The Chinese government is developing a biopic about the ancient philosopher Confucious and Chow Yun-Fat has signed on to star. Variety says that Hu Mei will direct the film, which is reported to have only a $2.8 million budget, although that converts to roughly $22 million in Hong Kong dollars. Shooting will start later this month in the Hebei province. The movie will screen later this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and Confucius' 2,560th birthday. Confucious' teachings are now gaining popularity as a way of bringing morals to the country which is contending with the rise of consumerism.

First Look: Olga Kurylenko in Neil Marshall's Centurion

First Look: Olga Kurylenko in Neil Marshall's Centurion

Apparently there's a lot more to Neil Marshall than we ever thought! After scaring us all with The Descent, he went on to direct Doomsday, a mash-up of everything old and new, proving that he's got a lot of things going on in his mind besides just claustrophobic horror. Next up for Marshall is Centurion, an epic action adventure film set in 117 AD about a group of Roman soldiers who must fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack. Seen below via Empire is ex-Bond girl Olga Kurylenko as the character Etain, described as "a savage-looking Pict warrior woman."

SXSW: We Saw the First Footage Ever for Bruno!

Bruno

Those of us attending SXSW in Austin were treated to 22 minutes of raw footage of the new Sacha Baron Cohen movie Bruno, the funny man's follow up to Borat, where he plays a gay Austrian fashion reporter for youth TV. The footage spanned three scenes, each of which included a personal SXSW greeting from Cohen. To the say the material was funny is a laughable insult itself. This brief look at Bruno quite possibly promises a more raucous laugh than Borat, which is no small feat. But how, you might ask? Take the first scene, which has Bruno interviewing parents in an attempt to find the right baby for a video production.

SXSW: Early Reaction to Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell

Drag Me to Hell

I think we all need to have a moment of silence and welcome back the Sam Raimi of old. Lump the man in with Cher and Madonna, because Raimi has returned to his particular recipe for horror, shaped during his days of Army of Darkness and Evil Dead, with a vigor that deserves an applause. And that's just what he got at the historic Paramount theater in Austin during the first ever public screening of Drag Me to Hell last night as part of SXSW. I will confidently say that it's an experience unlike few other and vintage Raimi through-and-through. The camp, the scares, the art, the gross-outs - it's all there, and then some.

Korean Teaser for Park Chan-wook's Vampire Thriller Thirst

Thirst Teaser Trailer

Korean director Park Chan-wook is better known as the brilliant mind behind the Vengeance trilogy - Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. In 2006 he directed I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK, but it never made its way to US soil as far as I know (anyone see it?). His latest film is a vampire thriller called Thirst and it's due out in Korea this April. Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, we've got our first look at a short Korean language teaser trailer for Thirst and it looks pretty solid. Apologies for the lack of subtitles, but Park Chan-wook fans should be able to appreciate it anyway.

Updates on the Evil Dead Franchise from Sam Raimi

Evil Dead

With Sam Raimi's throwback to classic horror Drag Me to Hell hitting theaters this May, fans have been getting more and more anxious to see the return of the Evil Dead franchise. At Comic-Con last year, Raimi revealed that he would love to make another Evil Dead; later in the year, he talked about remaking the original as well. IGN caught up with Raimi down at SXSW, where he was showing an early cut of Drag Me to Hell, and asked him about updates on the franchise, including a remake and a sequel. He doesn't promise anything too soon, but does give us some hope, especially on the side of the remake more than anything.

Now They've Crossed The Line - A MacGyver Movie?!

MacGyver

It's a sad day for Hollywood. They've finally crossed that line that no one wanted them to ever cross. New Line has greenlit a MacGyver feature film. Legendary producer Dino De Laurentiis and his daughter Raffaella are producing, along with series creator Lee Zlotoff. No word on whether the original MacGyver, Richard Dean Anderson, will be involved, but our guess is that he's not going to have anything to do with this. New Line hasn't hired a writer yet either, but they hope to find a script "that can acknowledge how the concept has staked a place into pop culture yet still makes for a serious and fun adventure movie."
