Matthew Vaughn Adapting Mark Millar's American Jesus
"They really are adapting everything aren't they," Dan Hacker said on Twitter after I first mentioned this news. British filmmaker Matthew Vaughn will team up again with comic book author Mark Millar to adapt Millar's American Jesus comic book series. The story centers on the return of Christ in the modern world, leading to a final confrontation with the Antichrist in a bid to save humanity. Vaughn is already planning to start this up in the summer after finishing Kick-Ass, which doesn't have a distributor yet and was independently financed. American Jesus will be developed the same way, independently, by Millar.

Ron Howard Might Direct The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft
Yet another indie graphic novel is headed to the big screen. Image Comics' The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, created by Mac Carter and Jeff Blitz, is being developed for Ron Howard to direct at Universal. The fictionalized tale borrows elements from Lovecraft's life, such as his own bouts with writer's block, and transforms his darkest nightmares into reality when he comes across a book that puts a curse on him and lets the evils he conjures up loose on the world. Universal picked this up because its take on classic horror fits in well with their monster movies like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man.

Nicole Kidman Rounds Out Woody Allen's Impressive Cast
So apparently Nicole Kidman hasn't retired from acting just yet? Last December we ran a somewhat speculative article about Kidman retiring from acting, but according to Hollywood Reporter, she has joined the cast of Woody Allen's newest film, which still remains untitled. Allen has been building up quite an impressive cast for this next film. Kidman will join Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins. But oddly, no one knows what this is about at all, besides that it is shooting in London this summer. However, with this high profile of a cast, I'm interested no matter what it's about.

Nearly Full Cast Announced for Ridley Scott's Robin Hood
It looks like the next film from Ridley Scott won't be anything to quickly forget, like A Good Year and Body of Lies. Scott is gearing up to shoot Robin Hood in the next few months and has finalized most of the cast, which will be headlined by Russell Crowe. The project was originally envisioned as a revisionist take on the Robin Hood story told from the point of view of the Sheriff of Nottingham, but that idea was scrapped. This latest iteration follows Robin from his early days in King Richard's army to his return to Nottingham to his creation of a band of mercenaries who challenge the sheriff and eventually try to prevent civil war.

Rumor: Is Simon Beaufoy Already Writing Wolverine 2?!
There's no way that X-Men Origins: Wolverine won't be a huge hit, so it wouldn't be crazy to see Fox prepping a sequel. However, they're being cautious, and probably won't greenlight anything until they see the actual box office returns. So therefore I'm a bit skeptical about this, but it's worth bringing up as a rumor. SlashFilm got an email from a reader in the UK who said that during a Q&A with Simon Beaufoy at the Bradford International Film Festival, Beaufoy mentioned that he's been hired to write Wolverine 2 and encouraged by his agent to take the job, even though he didn't even know who Wolverine was.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci Not Writing Transformers 3
Yesterday, a rumor started making the rounds (via SlashFilm) about writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman not returning for Transformers 3. I wasn't sure of the news, but I got a confirmation today and it looks like they will not be writing that sequel. The decision was made by Kurtzman and Orci themselves, and not Paramount or Michael Bay. Orci was quoted as saying: "The main reason we would move on is because we risk getting stale and comfortable. If you only sing one song for too long, you miss the opportunity to sing news songs." No word on who will be brought on to now write Transformers 3.

Script Details Emerge on Nightmare on Elm Street Reboot
Platinum Dunes' recent reboot of the Friday the 13th franchise wasn't a completely horrible trip back to one of the genre's classic scares. But what's in store for the studio's similar attempt at a modern A Nightmare on Elm Street? Well, Latino Review has a wonderful wrap-up of El Mayimbe's recent look at the script-in-progress (authored by Wesley Strick of Cape Fear, and, um, Doom), which appears to suggest a similar glossy, blockbuster makeover as with Friday the 13th. It sounds like a decent enough approach, but I'd obviously prefer something a bit more humble and disturbing than this. Read on for the early plot details.

Mark Millar's Godfather-Like Superman Pitch Probably Not Happening
Remember that awesome pitch for a Godfather-like trilogy of Superman movies from comic book author Mark Millar? Yea, it's probably not going to happen. Millar himself confirmed today on his forums at MillarWorld.tv (via The Playlist) that his pitch didn't get too far. "Warner's talked to us and a few other writer/director teams, but things seem to be in stasis right now. As far as I understand, nothing is happening with Superman at the moment and so the director and I are just working on another project. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, no biggie." Maybe there is some hope, but sadly, I doubt it'll happen.

First Look: DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon Promo
Although we won't be seeing a trailer for this for a while, the first promo image from DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon has popped up on the Brazilian site Animatoons. Currently slated to hit theaters in March 26th, 2010, How to Train Your Dragon is DWA's latest animated movie about the dragon Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, voiced by Jay Baruchel, who must learn to become a hero. The movie is an adaptation of Cressida Cowell's children's book of the same name. This photo below isn't much, but it really is our very first look at anything from How to Train Your Dragon.

Sean Penn, Jim Carrey, Benicio Del Toro: Your Three Stooges
Your modern day Three Stooges: Sean Penn as Larry, Jim Carrey as Curly, and Benicio Del Toro as Moe. Can you believe it? I know I can't. While the three actors aren't completely confirmed (they're "in negotiations" according to Variety), MGM is pushing them out there now, as production is supposed to start in early fall for release sometime in 2010. Peter and Bobby Farrelly, of There's Something About Mary, will be writing and direct. And don't forget, this isn't a biopic, but rather a "comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts."

Must Watch: Where the Wild Things Are Teaser Trailer!
Snowball fights? Piggyback rides? Howling? Big furry monsters? Yep, all that and more is in this first teaser trailer for Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are. There isn't much dialogue, just a little bit at the beginning, but the rest of this trailer is still amazing. It looks like an imaginative, fun, and wild kid's movie that adults will fall in love with, too. I've got such high hopes for Where the Wild Things Are, despite all the problems we heard about over the last few years. And from this trailer, it looks like Spike Jonze has created the newest soon-to-be classic kid's movie, right up there with The Goonies and The NeverEnding Story.

Tom Hanks Headed Back to Space as Major Matt Mason
Candy Land and Stretch Armstrong weren't the only movies Mattel had in the works. Universal is developing a live-action featured based on their action figure Major Matt Mason, which first appeared in the 1960s. Speed and Broken Arrow screenwriter Graham Yost has been hired to write this script. The most interesting bit of this news, however, is that Tom Hanks will produce and star in this adaptation. Hanks will play Major Matt Mason, the leader of a team of astronauts who worked on the moon and lived in a space station. Oddly enough, after we finally landed on the moon in 1969, Mattel eventually retired the toy line.
