Two Leading Ladies Set for Christopher Nolan's Inception
April 1, 2009
by Alex Billington
We finally have a second casting update for Christopher Nolan's next big sci-fi action movie Inception. Variety announced today that Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, and Cillian Murphy have joined the cast, alongside of Leonardo DiCaprio, who is set to star. Unfortunately, we still don't know what this about, not even a hint, besides being a "contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind." Any ideas? Nolan has been scouting locations and is getting ready to shoot Inception later this year. I wish we knew more, but the only other details we ahve are that Warner Brothers is releasing this on July 16th, 2010.
As for Cotillard, Page, and Murphy, I do like all three, and there is no question that they're very talented actors, but I've got to see them in action to truly be convinced. Okay, though I admit, I'm a sucker for anything from Christopher Nolan, and after Heath Ledger, I'm completely confident in his casting. I shouldn't even be questioning his choices, but I guess I've just got a bit of a problem with Marion Cotillard, because sometimes she doesn't fit in roles but gets cast because she has an Oscar. Although I'm sure Nolan cast her because she really is perfect for the role. This is otherwise starting to look like a great cast.
Update: Some brand new details on the characters in this have leaked out at Hollywood Reporter. DiCaprio's character is mentioned as a CEO-type, while Cotillard would play his wife. Page is a young college grad student and DiCaprio's sidekick. James Franco was also in talks to join the project but had to bow out due to a scheduling conflict with Your Highness. Interesting minor updates for sure.

This is what I'm talking about. Fantastic news. I was worried Marion Cotillard would get buried with american films but she's really carving out a place for herself. Great news.

While I feel a bit uneasy with the casting, I remember feeling enraged at his pick of Heath Ledger way back when, and look at how that turned out.
He has my full confidence. This movie will be legendary.

'but I guess I've just got a bit of a problem with Marion Cotillard, because sometimes she doesn't fit in roles but gets cast because she has an Oscar.'
How do you know she doesn't fit the roles that she been cast for just because of her Oscar? None of her post-Oscar movies have been released yet. She has only done two movies and we've only even seen the trailer for one.

I'm so psyched for this movie. Nolan hasn't let me down yet and I highly doubt that this movie won't be amazing. After he fantastically pulled off his unorthodox casting in his Batman films I have complete trust in his decisions. I'm curious as to the role Cillian Murphy's going to play, I'm just going to wait and see!

You mean how you write like an elementary school student?
That is a stellar cast, with a stellar director. Any concerns over talent of this caliber is nitpicking at best.

#15 - How was I attacking you and the way you write?
I was I merely asking how you could say she has been miscast in post Oscar roles when none of them have been released.
Is that not a reasonable question?
And for the record, I haven't seen any of her films. I just thought it was an interesting that you would make such a loaded statement.

I LOVE Ellen Page. And Nolan's casting looks promising i like and trust the guy in his casting because he got a sense of being professional and providing his fans with the best outcome.

This will be the make or break Ellen Page role, for me. She was great in "Juno", so I know she can do the hyper-intelligent, precocious teenager role. That sort of character is right in her wheelhouse; and she'd knock it out of the park every time. Now we'll (hopefully) get to see her stretch a little bit; and see just what kind of acting chops she has. It should be very interesting.

Hey, I have an idea! Nolan could cast Page in his movie after this one! Her character's name?
Robin!

How was Cotillard miscast in her post-Oscar roles (disregarding the fact that none of us have even seen them yet)? Her character in Public Enemies is half-French, so getting a French person to play her isn't exactly left-field casting. Based on the script for Public Enemies, she seems perfect for that role, imo. And considering Rob Marshall's gotten all sorts of nationalities for Nine, so I don't think she really stands out there (not nearly as much as DDL playing Guido, for example). I dunno, I guess I've just seen 6 or 7 of her movies and haven't seen a weak performance from her yet in some very different roles, so I have no reason to think she won't knock her post-Oscar roles out of the park as well.
Now, Page is a different story, but I think she can be quite good under the right director, so hopefully she'll work out as well. And I love Murphy, too, so I actually think this is all-around pretty great casting news.

I heard a rumor somewhere that this might be about the colonization of Venus. But, it was just a rumor, right?

I am more interested in the men. What is Tom Berenger going to be doing in the movie and why haven't we seen more of him?
