Paul Weitz is Directing Little Fockers, Not Pete Segal
April 3, 2009

Woops, some reported some news a little too early. A few weeks ago we reported that Get Smart's Pete Segal was in talks to direct Little Fockers, the third installment of the Meet the Parents series, but it turns out he didn't actually get the job. Variety is now reporting that Paul Weitz, of About a Boy, In Good Company, and American Dreamz previously, is in talks to direct the sequel for Universal. The studio has been searching for a suitable replacement for Jay Roach, the director of the first two, and it looks like Weitz is the one they wanted for the job. Let's hope he does a good job, because the series needs to be refreshed.
As I said originally, I liked Peter Segal for Little Fockers because I was hoping to see a fresh new face take over this franchise, and I think Segal is a good director and could bring something new to it. Weitz, on the other hand, not so much. He is just finishing directing Cirque du Freak with John C. Reilly, but his previous films aren't particularly any that show me he is capable of bringing anything new to this sequel, but rather just do exactly what the studio wants him to do. Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner are so far set to reprise their roles. Whatever the case, I won't be seeing this anyway.

Very excited about this. "Meet the Parents" was great. "The Fockers" was terrible. Awful awful film. I love Chris Weitz. "About a Boy" is in my top 5 favorite movies of all-time and "In Good Company" is also a terrific film.
