Rudo y Cursi is the first film from Cha Cha Cha, the production company formed by Mexican filmmakers Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. Directed by Carlos Cuarón and starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, Rudo y Cursi is a comedy about two siblings who become rivals in the world of professional soccer in Mexico. This had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was one of the first big acquisitions at the fest. It was a definite crowd pleaser and this trailer makes it look quite fun. If you're a fan of either Luna or Bernal, you'll want to check out this trailer.
From Peter Debruge's Sundance review on SpoutBlog: "Rudo y Cursi owes nothing to Hollywood storytelling, adhering instead to a wildly manic below-the-border sensibility in which fate doesn't follow Syd Field rules and chance can be truly unpredictable… Yet the film's appeal is truly universal."

Beto and Tato are a pair of rivaling, dim-witted brothers who work on a dusty banana ranch and play soccer for their local team. Beto, a goalie whose hot temper on the field earns him the nickname of Rudo, dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, while Tato wants to be a famous singer. They both share the dream of building a big house for their mother, but all of their desires seem completely out of reach, that is, until a talent scout, Batuta, discovers their skill on the field and brings them to Mexico City.
Rudo y Cursi is both written and directed by first-time Mexican filmmaker Carlos Cuarón, brother Alfonso Cuarón and director of handful of shorts previously. The film first premiered in Mexico in December and at Sundance in January and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics early on in the fest for an undisclosed amount. Sony Pictures Classics will be bringing Rudo y Cursi to limited theaters starting on May 8th.
