Larry Charles Directing Black List Script Winter's Discontent
April 7, 2009
by Alex Billington
Eclectic director Larry Charles, of Borat, a few episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm", Religulous, and the upcoming Bruno, will next direct Winter's Discontent. The comedy, written by first-timer Paul Fruchbom, was featured on last year's Black List, and is one of a few scripts from that list that have been making headlines recently (the other being Butter). The amusing logline for Winter's Discontent is as follows: When Herb Winter's wife of fifty years dies, the faithful but sexually frustrated widower moves into a retirement community to start living the swinging single life. Sounds like one hell of a steamy project.
The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven and Get Smart producer Alex Gartner will produce Winter's Discontent through their Sony-based Atlas Entertainment company. Larry Charles is a rather odd director. I can't say I really ever felt his presence on Borat or Religulous, primarily because both films were driven so much by the actions and performances of their leads. But maybe that's his strength - simply letting the talent do the work and the lead character drive the film, which for Winter's Discontent, will be a good idea. I just want to know who they end up casting as Herb Winter! Any suggestions? Michael Caine? Al Pacino?

I love Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Seinfeld. This man's a genius.
