The Weinstein Company Loses the Rights to Sin City 2?! Updated!

Over the last few months, we've reported on a few solid updates regarding Sin City 2, but of course, it still hasn't been given the greenlight. Now we may know why. IESB is reporting that The Weinstein Company has lost the rights to Sin City 2. They don't have any specifics, but they're saying that the sequel will now be financed by a private equity group and that Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios will still produce. As of last December, Frank Miller said that he had finished the script and was readying the movie. Most recently, Rosario Dawson confirmed that the script was done and that it might happen this year.
This is easily some of the best news we've heard all week. Not only was The Weinstein Company holding back Sin City 2, but the studio has become one of the worst distributors in recent years, with awful marketing campaigns and a general lack of concern for the true potential of their releases. If this is indeed the truth, and Sin City 2 has reverted back into the hands of Frank Miller, not only does it mean we might finally get to see this sequel (after five years), but Bob and Harvey Weinstein won't have their hands all over it. I've got to say, the more I hear about this sequel, the more excited I get to finally return to Basin City.
Update: According to Entertainment Weekly, this news just ain't true. "TWC's rights to produce sequels to Sin City remain intact as they always have been. Any suggestion to the contrary is complete hogwash," said TWC lawyer Bert Fields. Another source close to Rodriguez said, "It's not true. That's a rumor that's been going around for a while. It's really just a matter of timing, and he hopes to do it with them in the near future." We were worried of it was all a rumor, so sadly this means we still may never see Sin City 2?

As long as Robert Rodriguez is still there to direct, and he doesn't leave it in the hands of Frank Miller; sure, he created Sin City, but as a director he doesn't touch the class of Rodriguez. Definitely looking forward to this.

Just watched The Spirit yesterday, I'd say 4.5/10 but not nearly as horrible as everyone made it out to be on the internet.

Right on Alex. Weinstein Co. is garbage. Harvey stole TDK's best pic chances by manipulating Sydney Pollack on his death bed. Bout time they got some comeuppance.

I agree with #1, let Rodriguez handle the movie, i haven't seen the Spirit, I want to but I heard just bad things about never saw it in theaters, will probably check it out on DVD though. I 'm really excited for Sin City 2 though, can't wait to see who'll be back and new additions to the cast.

I'm so glad this being taken away from TWC….that's where movies go to die…let's hope Universal backs Rodriguez and it's his next film after Nerveracker
