Must Watch: Trailer for Foreign Language Oscar Winner Departures

Do you remember during the Oscars, when a Japanese film called Departures won for Best Foreign Language Film, taking the Oscar right out of the hands of Waltz With Bashir? Well we finally have the trailer for Departures, and it looks pretty good. Although I personally would have given the Oscar to The Class, I definitely want to see this and I expect it to be as wonderful as this trailer makes it out to be. Departures is a drama about a devoted cellist who finds himself without a job when his orchestra is dissolved. It looks emotional, amusing, charming, everything a great Oscar winner should be.

Departures, aka Okuribito, is directed by Japanese filmmaker Yojiro Takita, of The Tropical People, The Exam, The Yin Yang Master, When the Last Sword Is Drawn, Blood Gets in Your Eyes, and The Battery previously. The screenplay was written by Kundo Koyama, of only a few episodes of "Iron Chef" previously (they have writers for that?). This first premiered in Japan last September and has played at numerous film festivals before eventually winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film earlier this year. Regent Releasing is finally bringing Departures to limited theaters starting on May 29th this summer.

Im really interested in this 
Cant understand why Waltz with Bashir or The Class didnt win the oscar for the foreign movie award. The trailer looks pretty and the movie seems to be full of life. Really want to see it!

Looks not bad, interesting trailer. (But my personal oscar still goes here to 'Let The Right One In' - which unfortunately came out too late (?) in the US to be nominated for the Foreign Film Oscars. But who cares, you don't need that to enjoy this wonderful masterpiece. Besides, it did win a few dozen other awards… Sorry, little offtopic here :-).)

Even though you haven't seen Departures yet? I gotta say, it's a fucking shame that you aren't the one choosing who gets the Oscars, they would have been so much better if you were!

I've seen "Departures," and I liked it quite a bit. It's a shameless tearjerker, and not as good as "Waltz with Bashir," but it's very moving. I don't begrudge it it's win at all.

Looks amazing…these are the kinds of Japanese films that American audiences NEED to watch to actually understand Japanese cinema…it's not all horror, blood, or action. It's very emotional and beautiful as well (so, in short, it's the same as american cinema…just Japanese with Japanese mentality…).
I really want to see this, but I will probably wait to rent it…just too expensive in Japan. T_T
