Must Watch: First Crazy Trailer for Johnnie To's Vengeance
April 10, 2009
Source: Twitch
by Alex Billington
From Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To comes Vengeance, a brutal tale about a French assassin-turned-chef who travels to Hong Kong in order to avenge the murder of his daughter. I owe my thanks to Twitch for first digging up this glorious trailer. Its got somewhat of an old school John Woo feel to it, although that might not be accurate, because Johnnie To has been making films since 1986, almost as long as Woo has. Anyway, if you're a fan of Hong Kong cinema or Johnnie To or just want to see a badass trailer, then watch this. Although, since this is international, it may contain violence - you've been warned!
Watch the first trailer for Johnnie To's Vengeance:
For more info on Vengeance, head over to the official website: vengeance-lefilm.com
Vengeance is directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To, of films like The Mission, Running Out of Time, Election, Exiled, and The Sparrow previously. The screenplay was written by Ka-Fai Wai, of films like Love for All Seasons, Running on Karma, The Shopaholics, and Mad Detective previously. The film stars Simon Yam, Suet Lam and Anthony Wong. It is set to premiere in France in late May, but doesn't have a US distributor yet. Stay tuned for more information, as I'm sure we'll hear more on this during Cannes in May.

synopsis sounds like Taken gone bad

Johnnie To is a little less flashy and minimalist compared to Woo…the films have a more realistic grittiness to them..sometimes bordering on Shakespearean or operatic…I'm a big fan of the Election movies..I love the fact it's English and is starring French music legend "Johnny Hallyday" as the bad-ass ex-assassin…looks like it could be the next action classic

taken was an excellent movie by far…..but this will still kick ass. but of course, ppl will still always make their comparisons. then again, how about trying to compare them after you've seen this.

#7 I know what you mean…people there were revenge movies with fathers way before Taken…Commando anyone?

#8 No shit. Taken was one of the hundred or so "Father Getting Revenge" movies. You people need to expand beef up your Netflix accounts. BTW, Anthony Wong like a motherfucker.

The production of the movie was largely reportes here in france because Johnnie To wanted Alain Delon to star in the movie, as a reference to his favorite old french Melville movies like "le samourai" … but Alain Delon refused so he got "Johnny Halliday"
an old french rock star who acted before, and even in some spaghetti western in the late 60' …

You guys have to admit, no matter how good this is gonna be, that it looks like a classic mid-90s action movie. This is like the Japanese-French equal to Desperado.

le samourai is a great film. Too bad To couldn't get Alain Delon. Oh well, looks good anyway. I'll be seeing it. I could care less if it reminds me of Taken.

"because Johnnie To has been making films since 1986, almost as long as Woo has."
Well, John Woo has been making films since 1971, not "almost as long" in my book. Maybe Alex means films in international distribution but then again, I'm not certain if Johnnie To made those in 1986 either…

the frame looks good and has that air about it that it packs a punch too
gotta wait till i get home to see the trailer
but from what its been explained here and various other sites this is gonna be very cool to watch
the theme looks similar to Taen (which was wayy perfect
) but this being a honkong flick i believe the violence will be way fater and gritty than Taken.
i will definetely look for more info regarding this
cheers
