McG Bringing Broadway's Spring Awakening to Theaters?

McG really is a jack of all trades, isn't he? As announced via Hollywood Reporter tonight, the filmmaker is set to bring the Broadway rock musical Spring Awakening to the big screen, developing it with original book and lyrics writer Steven Sater. Set in 19th-century Germany, the coming-of-age story follows a group of teens discovering their sexuality and dealing with topics like masturbation, abortion, rape and suicide. Yes, this is the very same production that McG wants to the bring to the big screen. He may even make it without a studio at first, "in order to make a more intimate, or indeed an edgier, movie version." Is this a big hoax?
The music for Spring Awakening was written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater. The show is based on an 1891 German play and opened on Broadway in 2006, winning multiple Tony Awards. McG actually has a background in music: he got his start as a songwriter (he produced Sugar Ray's first album and co-wrote songs on the second) then as a music video director. Despite that background, this seems like an odd choice, especially when he's being offered the Terminator Salvation sequels and gigs like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Although I've got a feeling he may only produce in the end, which he's already attached to do.

I saw the traveling production of Spring Awakening a few months ago. The music is excellent, but the story is a complete mess.
I don't trust an "auteur" like McG to make any sense of it. It's the music that's going to do all the heavy lifting.

Why would this be a hoax? Everyone gives directors like McG shit for only doing overblown blockbusters with no soul, but when they find that project everyone gives them shit for not being qualified to make a "real movie".
As long as they don't do a"modern re-telling" and turn it into Spring Awakening meets The Hills, then I think this could be an excelent film concept. The show is great source material.

Jack of all trades infers that it is someone who is at the very least "competant" in many skills…. McG does NOT fit that description at all. If you try a few different genres and fail completely that does not make you a Jack of all trades. I think Terminator looks good, but I will be suprized if it is any good in the end. But hopefullyMcG has learned something while filming his other disasters, then he can be competant at one thing and you can call him a jack of one trade.

McG is not qualified to direct either an overblown piece of shit OR a "real movie."
He is a hack in every sense of the word. He goes *PROFESSIONALLY* by McG!!!
