Tron 2 Budget Update - No Where Near $300 Million

No one really wants a $300 million budget, do they? Last week we wrote about how the budget for Disney's Tron 2 was being reported by the Vancouver Sun as being upwards of $300 million. In the article, I joked about getting "an update from Disney by the end of the day." Well, an update has arrived (via SlashFilm) and it looks like the budget is nowhere near $300 million. While it's company policy not to release actual amounts, Disney says the number is not anywhere close to that amount, not even in Canadian dollars. Good news? Who knows. For technical reasons, I was actually excited that it was going to cost a whole lot.
But let's stick to the good news, instead of debunking rumors all day long. Here's something I didn't know - Oscar nominated cinematographer Claudio Miranda is the director of photography on Tron 2. He last did The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, so if you liked how that looked, then you'll be happy to know Tron 2 is in the same hands. That photo above with the taxi in the corner comes from Flickr, where a random photographer in Vancouver got a shot of Miranda working on the Tron set. It's nothing too exciting, especially in conjunction with this budget update, but it was a good way of featuring this info anyway.
The film is being shot entirely in digital 3D, mostly with Sony's F-35 camera. Miranda is also shooting Steadicam shots in 3D and crane shots in 3D, which is apparently a challenge considering how much different 3D cameras are from the norm. Stay tuned for more updates as they arrive from Canada!
