Toby Kebbell Joins the Evil Side of The Sorcerer's Apprentice
April 19, 2009
by Alex Billington
Up-and-coming British actor Toby Kebbell has joined the cast of the currently in-production film The Sorcerer's Apprentice for Disney. Kebbell will play a character named Drake Stone, a celebrity illusionist who joins forces with Alfred Molina's evil sorcerer, Horvath, to gain ultimate powers. As we already know, Nic Cage will star as the sorcerer Balthazar Blake and Jay Baruchel as his apprentice, in a story about a college student who is recruited to work reluctantly for said sorcerer and given a crash course in magic to help him battle dark forces in Manhattan. Jon Turteltaub is directing and Jerry Bruckheimer is producing.
For those not familiar with Toby Kebbell, he was last seen in Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla, as the character the movie was about - punk rocker Johnny Quid (see photo above). He also appeared in Control, Alexander, and Dead Man's Shoes. I wouldn't call this a chance for him to break out, but I'm betting everyone is going to wonder who this guy is once Sorcerer's Apprentice hits theaters. And speaking of hitting theaters, this is currently slated to arrive on July 16th, 2010, the same day as Christopher Nolan's Inception. Given this is currently shooting in New York City, I don't think we'll hear much more about casting, but who knows?

He was incredible in Dead Man's Shoes but awful in RocknRolla which I put down to an amazingly poor script. Mockney gangsta by the numbers rubbish.

Great post Alex, thank god there are guys like you that put the focus on some of the finer actors around.
Kebbell has been most excellent in all of his works that I've seen. Rocknrolla, Control, Northern Soul and most definitely in Dead Man's Shoes.
Considering he even got the role in the latter film only 3 weeks before shooting, that performance was nothing short of amazing.

Kebbell should be a A-lister because he owned Rocknrolla like a prison-bitch. Looked like a R-rated Plastic Man in that film!!!
