Cameron Diaz's Comeback Driven by Three Studio Projects

Although she has been a few good movies in the last few years, Cameron Diaz just hasn't been as big of a star as she was back in the 90s. Since Gangs of New York in 2002, shes only been in four movies, not counting her voice work for the Shrek series. She's already got My Sister's Keeper and The Box coming up, but besides those, what else is on her slate? Let's take a look. EW has announced that she will star in a legal drama called Bobbie Sue; additionally, she joined a romantic comedy called Swingles, and another romantic comedy project with Tom Cruise previously known as Wichita being directed by James Mangold.

In Bobbie Sue, Diaz will play a ballsy New York attorney who is brought into a prestigious, sexist law firm to litigate an important client's sexual discrimination suit. The project is on the fast-track at Warner Brothers with script rewrites being finished, although no director has been hired yet.

In the comedy Swingles, the story centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman he can't stand in order to meet singles. My guess is that Diaz will play that "sharp-tongued woman." This project is in development at Paramount, but doesn't have a director yet either.

Wichita is about a woman who has terrible luck with men but finds her path intertwined with that of a mysterious handsome man she meets on a blind date. Tom Cruise will supposedly star opposite Diaz. James Mangold of Girl Interrupted, Kate & Leopold, Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma will direct.

I don't know about everyone else, but I really don't like Cameron Diaz much. Not only is she fairly unattractive (that's just my opinion), but she plays cheap, cheesy roles so she doesn't need much effort to pull them off. I think the best of this batch might be Wichita, or whatever it's going to be called, largely because Mangold is a good director and Tom Cruise should be great in a romantic comedy, even working opposite Diaz. As for the other two projects, Bobbie Sue and Swingles, I've got a feeling they're going to be rather forgettable films in the end. Suffice to say, I'm not looking forward to her comeback. Are you?

Her best role so far has been in Vanilla Sky, she was more effective than Cruise or Cruz in it. Maybe she should opt to do something in that nature and stop appearing in so many lobotomized romantic comedies, or unfunny SNL skits. BTW I think she used to be smoking hot back in the mid 90s. Gravity sucks, Newton was right. But I wouldn't go as far as to say she is ugly. And she seems like a very charming woman, maybe she should act more her age so audiences can take her more seriously. Nuff goofing around.

Maybe she got tired of being the It Girl and has just relaxed a little about her career/life. More power to her! She has surprised me by being a quality performer who has taken some chances with her roles, including a couple that made her look unattractive physically or otherwise (a Fatal Attraction type in Vanilla Sky, a scarred woman in Gangs, kinda plain in Malkovich).

She seems to be a relatively nice, humorously self-deprecating person for a Hollywood denizen (of course, she is an actress).

I think she'll be on movie screens long after Katherine Heigl, Rachel McAdams and Kate Bosworth have gone on to CSI shows.
