If There is Ever a Gremlins 3, Joe Dante Won't Direct It

More remake news, right, I know no one wants to hear it, but when it involves a franchise I love, I've got to say something. This is all just a rumor right now and nothing is confirmed, but we'll let director Joe Dante himself explain (via Bloody Disgusting). "I find it hard to believe that they won't make a Gremlins 3 because they’re remaking Adventures in Babysitting. I mean, they're gonna remake everything." He's certainly right about that. And interestingly, the studios seem intent on returning to the original creators for franchises like this (just look at the Aliens news today). So why not one day bring back Joe Dante?
Interestingly, Dante seems to believe that they definitely won't go back to him. "They did that once, they won't do it again," Dante laughingly told BD. "They made that mistake once. Its a moot point, they won't be coming to me… I can tell you that for a fact." The "they" he is talking about is Warner Brothers, who made the first two Gremlins movies. I'm confused, though, was Gremlins 2 considered a screw up? I don't know about everyone else, but I love that movie. It's not better than the original, but it's absolutely ridiculous and fun. So while there aren't plans for a Gremlins 3 right now, I'm sure there will be some soon enough.

Gremlins 2 was like a spoof film version of the first one though?
Why am I even typing this…
Fire Hollywood.

You're right. It was a spoof of the first almost which I enjoyed. I love it, makes me laugh. Never the less, with the third they could go either way. I'd want a dark version though that's decently scary.

Joe Dante is one of the GREAT talents in Hollywood. Gremlins is one of the best summer movies of all time and Gremlins 2 was a very imaginative sequel. Why Dante hasn't directed much since is something I will never understand.

#4 Couldn't have put it better myself. Dante's one of my favourite directors, criminally underused.
As for a dark Gremlins movie - yes, the first one is very gruesome as well as being hilarious, so we already have a precedent for that approach. The second one is brilliant too; I guess it just didn't make as much money as the studio wanted (I'm not sure - I'd have to check). It's much sillier if memory serves, and I guess silliness is an acquired taste. So perhaps it's a combination of those two factors that makes Dante think they wouldn't want him back. Shame. I'd love to see some time and energy put into developing new cutting-edge animatronic technology rather than just CG-ing it all…

I would love to see a Gremlins movie as good as the first one, but its really easy to screw that up.
If they can copy the tone of the first one, that would be perfect. Oh … and it has to be like 90% puppets.

everything certainly will be remade….this saddens me. No remakes should ever be made, period.
Anyway, id actually love a Gremlins 3 assuming Dante is bought in.

I think the 2nd one is far better then the first one. But that is just me.

Gremlins 2 wasn't really a screw up, I think they Dante decided to have fun and make a more comedy-oriented sequel that spoofs the first film, which I consider a good mix of horror and comedy.
That said, while I wouldn't mind seeing one, I won't hold my breath for a third film.

Send the word STOP to Hollywood to stop remaking and continuing old good movies.

I interviewed Director Gregg Bishop (THE OTHER SIDE, DANCE OF THE DEAD) in 2008, and he said that if a studio ever offered to let him make a sequel, he'd want to make Gremlins 3.
