More Fun Live-Action TMNT Updates from Peter Laird

Now that we officially know that Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo - also known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - are due back on the big screen in live-action form by 2011, everyone wants to know exactly how they're going to pull it off. Last week TMNT co-creator Peter Laird talked briefly about the face replacement technology and confirmed that they'll actually use full body suits. But what about the story? Our cohorts at MTV caught up with Laird and got him to reveal more about some early ideas and his hopes for this origin story, beyond that it'll include April O'Neil, Casey Jones, and Shredder.
"I can say that at this point there are a lot of positive feelings about a Batman Begins-style 'reboot,' which would, of necessity, include a retelling of the Turtles' origin story," Laird told MTV. I get giddy just imagining a gritty PG-13 Batman-like TMNT movie, but that probably won't happen, because I'm sure studios will focus on its connection to kids. Even though Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's comic did debut in 1984 and has a lot of older fans. Laird continues, "Having said that, I would also be into an all-new story, if it was decided that that was a more desirable direction. Either way is fine with me, to be honest!"
And as for other wild ideas, Laird throws some more crumbs out for fans. "I would not be unhappy to somehow see the tale of Baxter Stockman and the robotic 'mousers' folded into this movie, as well as some elements possibly setting up the TCRI connection for a possible sixth (or seventh) movie. But I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself there." For those of you also confused by that "sixth or seventh" reference, I think he is eluding to the eventual progression of the series. As in, we've had four movies at this point (including the animated TMNT movie of 2007), so this new one would be the fifth Turtles movie.
If you're a longtime fan of the comics, then all of this should definitely be getting you very excited. I know I'm just getting pumped to see so much talk of the Turtles back in the mainstream news again. And as for the full body suits, Laird reiterates that they won't screw this up again. "The basic idea, as I understand it, is to do an all live action shoot, with actors and stuntmen in full Turtle suits," then later use CGI to add facial expressions. The reference he uses is Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. "This technology has been proven to be incredibly effective if done correctly." I've heard enoguh, bring on the Turtles!

Gosh I'm excited about this and I agree with the mousers and Baxter. Something that lacked from the movies as they were a huge part of the show and comic. I don't see why people need a dark TMNT, the first one was pretty gritty off the back. It's what Batman Begins was long before it and an excellent film to boot. The second a bit more comical for a younger audience and the third obviously a lot more comical. Then the stupid animated one came out.

the first one was the best movies of them all. i would love to see them go back to that point and run from there. with the way movies are now having the story and grit of the first one would be soft to most teens now a days. Which means they can make it with the same style as that first one. Just dont make it as childish as the third one. Good things can come from this and alot of money. Thank the Lord they are making this!!!

Adding Baxter to the mix would be super cool but at the end of the day, I would be very happy with a standard origin story where they battle Shredder and his foot soldiers.
Let's leave Vanilla Ice out of it this time…Talk about a WTF were they thinking movie scene.

I like the idea of the origin story and to bring in baxter. I don't like the idea of a new story really. I don't know what this means, but everyone is so familiar with their story already that I don't think a new story would be a good idea. Unless it is some really grand idea.

THis is So Exciting. Being a long time fan of the cartoons, I'm now getting into the comic books. And Personally I would love to see a Much more Ninja Dark side to the turtles…for Gods Sake Lets stab someone!

the original comic by Eastman and Laird is definetely not childs story
it was gritty
dark and
black humorous
so i really would like to see a tmnt that appealed more to the adult line
it might not be an R which will be a lot to ask but please definetely not a pg13.

ok i am 25 and i have loved turtles for as long as i can remember. i will always support the turtles but if they do this movie and they once again sell out by making a fucking PG movie and not at least push for at least a light PG-13 then im afraid the turtles will be done for and they can also forget about the sixth and seventh movie. hard core fans like myself (along with others) stood by while they got their PG movie out there so they can half way bring back the turtles. but to be honest thier ninja turtles and i cant see even a hard pg movie doing any ninja movie good. it doesnt nessacerily need cursing or drastic kill scenes but it does need awsom fight scenes that i know the turtles deserve. i just cant see a PG movie giving that to them. most people who read the comics are over tweenty and not to mention who had supported the new show. i dont know to many kids who like the tmnt. the only reason they want to keep it for kids is to be able to sell toys for the movie. please just this one time dont sell the turtles out to what big corporations want them to be, let them be the way they were meant to be and i gauntee it wouldnt be regreted. all the same im excited about the movie i just hope you guys understand all the fans you'll loose if you go that route.
one last thing that doesnt make sense to me…batman, spiderman, incredible hulk, fantastic 4, xmen all started out as comics then were turned into kiddie shows. but when came time for the movies they all had PG-13 ratings. now if they can do that why the hell are they so critical about tmnt's ratings.
anyway long live the tmnt………..hopefully
