Indie Acquisitions: Drew Barrymore's Whip It, Patton Oswalt's Big Fan

Big Fan / Whip It

I thought I'd group together a few various indie film acquisitions today, since there are at least two worth mentioning. Drew Barrymore's Whip It, starring Ellen Page and Marcia Gay Harden, was picked up by Fox Searchlight (via Rope of Silicon). Early word is that they'll be releasing it on October 9th (I'm guessing it will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival). Additionally, The Wrestler writer Robert Siegel's directorial debut, Big Fan, starring Patton Oswalt that premiered at Sundance this year, was picked up by First Independent Pictures and will hit limited theaters in late summer to early fall (via indieWIRE).

Two more announcements of note. The Weinstein Company has finally set a release date for John Hillcoat's post-apocalyptic thriller The Road, based on the Cormac McCarthy novel. It will now hit limited theaters starting on October 16th later this year. Additionally, Miramax and Focus Features have acquired the English remake rights to Guillaume Canet's French thriller Tell No One, which first hit theaters in France back in 2006. Kathleen Kennedy will produce the remake. And if you're wondering, Whip It is indeed the roller derby film where Ellen Page plays a Texas teen who gives up beauty pageants for roller derbies.
