It's Official - Robert Rodriguez Really is Rebooting Predator

Predator

In January we wrote up a rumor from Bloody Disgusting about how Robert Rodriguez's name was being thrown around in connection with a reboot of the Predator series. It wasn't confirmed at the time, then Rodriguez separately announced his new sci-fi film Nerveracker, so we thought all hope had been lost. However, IESB has just heard via Rodriguez himself at a press conference in Austin, Texas that a Predator reboot is indeed on his slate, not only for him to produce, but also to eventually direct. The original pitch was as follows: "In the reboot a team of commandoes face down a mysterious race of vicious monsters."

Must Watch: First Seven Minutes of The Brothers Bloom

First Seven Minutes of The Brothers Bloom

I'm breaking one of my own unwritten rules by bringing you this footage from Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom this wonderful morning. But that's because I absolutely adore this movie and I think this opening does a wonderful job of drawing audiences into the story without spoiling anything at all. You'll see exactly what I mean when you watch this. It's a brilliant opening anyway and really does set the mood for what is about to eventually play out within the film. If you don't want to go out in theaters and finish watching The Brothers Bloom after this opening, well, then there's no hope for you anyway. Enjoy!

Check This Out: Concept Art Sketches of Carl from Pixar's Up

Concept Art Sketches of Carl from Pixar's Up

Fellow Pixar fanboy Peter of SlashFilm came across some wonderful concept art sketches on display at an exhibit at Walt Disney Studios (via IMDb). As we already know, Pixar's latest film Up is about a grumpy old man named Carl who floats down to South America in his house. There's a great sequence at the beginning of the film that follows Carl from when he is a kid until he becomes the grumpy old man, and you get to see him throughout all ages of his life. For those who haven't seen that sequence, this is your chance to see what Carl looks like over the years. Beyond that, these are just incredible sketches and amazing to see anyway.

James Marsden to Star in Rod Lurie's Straw Dogs Remake

Straw Dogs - James Marsden

It was nearly two years ago this week that we first announced that Screen Gems' was remaking Straw Dogs. It has taken the last 18 months for the project to finally get off the ground. James Marsden will star as a Los Angeles screenwriter named David Sumner, who moves with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, leading to a violent confrontation. The original 1971 Straw Dogs was directed by Sam Peckinpah and stared Dustin Hoffman. This reimagining will be directed by Rod Lurie of the drama Nothing But the Truth most recently.

Well, the horror junkies at Bloody Disgusting received the scoop that Urban Legends: Bloody Mary actress Rooney Mara is in final negotiations to star as the "average," hometown teen Nancy. Kate Mara Joins and Clark Gregg Returns for Iron Man 2

Clark Gregg and Kate Mara

Two minor casting updates for Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2. We Are Marshall actress Kate Mara has joined the cast, and Choke writer/director/actor Clark Gregg has officially returned to reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. We know who Gregg is set to play, but Mara's role is "being kept under wraps." That's a bit odd, considering Favreau and company are already shooting in Manhattan Beach. No hints as to who she might play, but I'm intrigued by her casting. We already know that Scarlett Johansson is playing Black Widow and Gwyneth Paltrow is back as Pepper Potts, so what other female characters are there?

What is Next for State of Play Director Kevin Macdonald?

Kevin Macdonald

Those of you who have seen State of Play know that it's a great film for many reasons, but one of them is because Kevin Macdonald's direction is top notch and it adds a lot to the experience. So therefore I'm naturally interested in following him and his projects, since this isn't his first great film (he also directed The Last King of Scotland). Variety announced today that Macdonald will develop and direct an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's 1955 novel "The End of Eternity". But that's not his very next project. He's also set to direct a project called Eagle of the Ninth, a second-century Roman military drama for Focus Features.

Cameron Diaz's Comeback Driven by Three Studio Projects

Cameron Diaz

Although she has been a few good movies in the last few years, Cameron Diaz just hasn't been as big of a star as she was back in the 90s. Since Gangs of New York in 2002, shes only been in four movies, not counting her voice work for the Shrek series. She's already got My Sister's Keeper and The Box coming up, but besides those, what else is on her slate? Let's take a look. EW has announced that she will star in a legal drama called Bobbie Sue; additionally, she joined a romantic comedy called Swingles, and another romantic comedy project with Tom Cruise previously known as Wichita being directed by James Mangold.

Weinstein Company Really Did Lose the Rights to Sin City 2?

Sin City

A couple of weeks ago, it was first reported by IESB that The Weinstein Company (TWC) had lost the rights to Sin City 2. Thus, the sequel was looking for independent financiers, with Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios still in line to produce. After the news hit, Entertainment Weekly received a few updates from various TWC insiders saying that this news was all just complete bullshit. Well, speaking of bullshit, the Hollywood Reporter has just published an article saying that various producers have confirmed that they've been offered the rights to Sin City 2. If I were Frank Miller, I'd want to find a new studio, too.

Sony Wants Spider-Man 4 in 3-D? Say it Ain't So!

Spider-Man

"Could be" is all that Sony's head Amy Pascal said in response when asked about if we'll see Spider-Man 4 in 3-D. So how did we get to this point? Forbes.com has posted a very interesting interview with Pascal and fellow studio head Michael Lynton. They discuss most of the business side of Sony Pictures, but near the end they get into the 3-D realm, starting with a question about Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Sony's upcoming fall animated release. From there, they continue into a question about live-action 3-D. Her answer to that question is not only very intriguing, but it leads directly into the Spider-Man 4 question.
