First Look: Mel Gibson is Acting Again in Edge of Darkness!
Damn, those guys at Empire are on a roll this week! Their latest first look photo debut is of Mel Gibson in Martin Campbell's thriller Edge of Darkness. Gibson hasn't been seen in front of the camera since The Singing Detective in 2003 and Signs in 2002 before that (and no, The Colonel doesn't count). He's back acting again, this time as a homicide cop who witnesses the death of his activist daughter right in front of his own eyes. He then sets out to catch the killers, uncovering a larger conspiracy in the process. Knowing how the story plays out (see below), our guess is that this photo is from an early scene of the film.

Magneto Spin-Off Movie Dependent on Wolverine's Success
With X-Men Origins: Wolverine hitting theaters in a few weeks, I'm always seeing that "X-Men Origins" prefix and thinking about more X-Men movies. And one of them that always comes to mind is X-Men Origins: Magneto, the spin-off about Eric Lensherr that was once receiving as much attention as Wolverine, before that went into production. So what's the latest on that project? SciFi Wire talked with producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently and got a somewhat hazy update. "I don't know," she admitted at first. "We will do that. We all want to. Magneto is a fantastic script, and hopefully we'll make it."

Check This Out: Our First Look at Hit Girl in Kick-Ass!
Everything has been rather quiet on the Kick-Ass front recently. Our very last update on Matthew Vaughn's adaptation was from January, and we haven't seen anything since then. However, Empire has dropped by again with a new photo from Kick-Ass of the second biggest character in the film (pun intended), named Hit Girl. For those unfamiliar with the badass comics, Hit Girl aka Mindy, is an 11 year old ultimate assassin who spends time slicing people up with samurai swords alongside of her pops, Big Daddy. "Think Jodie Foster, Natalie Portman and Uma Thurman rolled into one... She kills, I think, 20 people in a minute."

Fascinating Trailer for Disneynature's Oceans Documentary
In honor of today being Earth Day, Disney has launched the trailer for their newest nature movie Oceans, due out in theaters exactly one year from today, on Earth Day 2010. While I'm at it, I should mention that I saw Disneynature's Earth last week, and it's actually pretty amazing. I would highly suggest seeing it, especially since it just hit theaters today and Disney has a promotion running where your ticket money is used to help save the Earth. Anyway, half of this trailer features archival footage of Walt Disney talking about his original "True-Life Adventures" films, and it's fascinating to watch simply for that alone. Enjoy!

First Official Photo from Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island
Our friends over at Empire have yet again debuted another new first look photo today, this time from Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island. Unfortunately, it's not that impressive, considering it's just a simple behind-the-scenes shot of Scorsese working with Leonardo DiCaprio and Michelle Williams. Apparently Shutter Island is a "stylistic shift" for Scorsese. Mark Ruffalo, who co-stars as a US marshal, said, "This could be one of [Scorsese's] great films. He gets to do everything he loves about film: noir, dream sequences, suspense, tough urban stuff. It's absolute madness, twist upon twist." Check out the photo below.

Rumor: Laurie and Sutherland Starring in The Yellow Mark?
Now this is a comic book movie you probably haven't heard of yet. A couple of various international movie sites - Cineman.ch and DesmontandoHollywood - are reporting major casting updates on a project called The Yellow Mark, an adaptation of a classic 1950's Belgian comic book primarily known as The Yellow 'M'. Apparently Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia revealed at a press conference during the Malaga Film Festival that Hugh Laurie and Kiefer Sutherland will star as Blake and Mortimer, the two leads in the film. I'm only skeptical because it would be quite a feat to cast these two TV stars in the same project.

Did Tom Rothman Lie About the Wolverine Leak's Running Time?
As long as everything goes as planned, I'll finally be seeing X-Men Origins: Wolverine by the end of this week. I did not watch the leaked version and I'm still excited for it, despite all of the negativity coming from that bootleg, and that's because I heard that the leaked version was an early workprint with missing scenes and unfinished effects. However, I should mention an article that I recently came across on the Huffington Post (via SlashFilm) about the running times of the leaked version and final print being the same. They are speculating that Tom Rothman's statement on Entertainment Weekly might have just been one big lie.

British Cast Lined Up for Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll
Director Mat Whitecross has lined up one hell of a fantastic British cast for Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, his in-development biopic about punk legend Ian Dury. Naomie Harris, Ray Winstone, Olivia Williams, Noel Clarke, Toby Jones, MacKenzie Crook and Bill Milner have all signed on to star in the film opposite Andy Serkis, who plays the polio-afflicted frontman. Whitecross is gearing up to start shooting in London on May 3rd. The script was written by actor Paul Viragh and the project is being produced by Damian Jones. While I don't know much about Ian Dury, this sounds like a great project to keep our eye on as it develops.

LeBron James' More Than a Game Documentary Trailer
I saw this trailer for the first time last weekend, but it played after the Facing Ali trailer, so it really didn't look that great in comparison. However, I've received numerous e-mails from readers urging me to write about it anyway, so here it is. More Than a Game is a documentary made by Kristopher Belman about basketball superstar LeBron James aka "The Chosen One" and his four high school friends dubbed the "Fab Five." It follows their childhood friendship together and victory at the high school national championship. It's much less about LeBron and his stardom today, and more about how he got to that point and his story.

Twilight Updates: New Moon Wolves, Another Eclipse Director
I'm packing all of the Twilight news into one post today, so that those who don't really care about the franchise can skip over it easily. Let's get down to it. That cringe-inducing photo you see above is of the "wolf pack" from the upcoming The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Seen shirtless are actors Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Bronson Pelletier, all with Native American heritage, who are joining Taylor Lautner as werewolves in the film. Thanks to USA Today for the photo. In other Twilight news, apparently the report that Juan Antonio Bayona would direct the third film was actually wrong.

Latest Minor Project Updates on Peter Berg's Dune Reboot
Earlier today we previewed the 14 remaining sci-fi movies of 2009, and although I'm insanely excited for James Cameron's Avatar, the next sci-fi movie on my list that I'm probably most excited for isn't really on there - Dune. Yep, way back in 2007 it was announced that Frank Herbert's masterpiece was going to be adapted once again, this time by The Rundown and Hancock director Peter Berg. I specifically mention The Rundown, because Berg worked with producer Kevin Misher on that film, and Berg and Misher are teaming up again on Dune. Our friends at io9 talked with Misher recently and got an update on the project.

Jason Statham to Star in Remake of The Mechanic?
Jason Statham is a badass, we all know that, but when he stars in movies like Crank: High Voltage, you start wondering what's next. How can this guy ever top anything he did in that movie? Sure, he's got Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables coming up, which will probably be the only movie that will ever match the level of badassery found within Crank, but what else? Production Weekly is reporting (via twitter) that Statham may star in a "reinvention" of the 1972 Charles Bronson action classic The Mechanic. Apparently Simon West of Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and When a Stranger Calls, is in talks to direct.
