Sixty-Six Adaptation is Next for Director Barry Levinson

Might this finally be the comeback project for Barry Levinson? Since Bandits in 2001, most of the director's films haven't been big hitters, either at the box office or with critics. Levinson is now set to adapt his own novel titled "Sixty-Six" that was first published in 2003. The coming of age story, set in 1966 Baltimore, is about a group of high school buddies trying to cope with grown-up life on the eve of significant historical events like the counterculture movement and the war in Vietnam. Levinson is writing the script and will direct the adaptation. He plans on financing the movie independently will start casting soon.
Sixty-Six will complete an informal series in which Levinson examines the social dynamics in Baltimore at various periods throughout the 20th century. He kicked that off with 1983's Diner, set in the Baltimore of 1959, and covered related ground in Avalon (1990), Tin Men (1987) and Liberty Heights (1999). "It's really the last of the diner stories," Levinson said of this project. "It's about a world that's on he cusp of a big change and a group of people who are on the cusp of adulthood." The book has some very positive reviews on Amazon, which is at least a good sign so far. We'll let you know who Levinson eventually casts in this.
