Darren Lynn Bousman Remaking Kaufman's Mother's Day
May 7, 2009
by Alex Billington
No not that Charlie Kaufman, we're talking about Charles S. Kaufman! Back in 1980, Kaufman brought us the cult classic Mother's Day, about two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. Twisted Pictures, the Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment are moving forward on a remake of Mother's Day, with former Saw series and Repo! The Genetic Opera director Darren Lynn Bousman helming. "We're taking the iconic image of a mother, the most comforting and nurturing person in the world, and perverting that into something that is punishing and sadistic," exec Richard Saperstein said.
This remake, written by newcomer Scott Milam, will see the villainous family return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests. The story will reflect today's times and the rough economy. "She's lost her house… Her boys are going to get it back to her." If this is sounding a bit like The Strangers from last year, don't worry, they promise it'll be different. The tone of their Mother's Day remake "will be post-Strangers in that is has very realistic qualities but has a high-concept overlay, this punishing maternal figure." The producers are eyeing a July start and a spring release timed for Mother's Day 2010.
Maybe it's just me, but this doesn't sound like anything I'm going to be excited about. Then again, Darren Bousman is a great director, and I trust him, so knowing he's involved calms my nerves a bit. Maybe I'm just not a fan of campy horror like this, but who knows, it could turn out great? I think the best way to end this is with the unforgettable iconic quote: "I'm so proud of my boys. They never forget their momma."
