Next Up for Marc Forster is Disconnect, Not World War Z
May 8, 2009
by Alex Billington
As much as I'd love to see a World War Z movie next year, it looks like that won't be the next project for director Marc Forster. As announced today via Variety, the next gig for Forster will be a tech thriller called Disconnect that is being developed by the indie company Nala Films. Written by Andrew Stern, the script explores the mystery of how people live in today's wired world, where the technology meant to bring them together only forces them further apart. I'm not sure if that means it'll involve some sort of high concept global threat or a small scale interpersonal struggle, but it should be interesting to see either way.
Back in November, on the eve of the opening of Forster's Quantum of Solace, it was announced that he would direct the highly anticipated adaptation of Max Brooks' beloved zombie book World War Z. I actually really love Forster and his style and his directing and was happy to see him take on that adaptation. He's still set to direct it, however he'll probably shoot Disconnect before he gets to that. As for this thriller, I'm concerned that it'll be way too similar to Eagle Eye or The International, so I certainly hope Stern's script is not like either of those and is both original and entertaining. I expect to hear casting on this fairly soon.

That's great news because QOS was shocking. A real backwards step for the series and his direction was a mix of different and annoying styles.
With his fondness of lightning editing, all the zombie attacks would have been confusing, rushed and utterly distracting whose only result is to make you come out of the movie/fantasy because you can't actually see what is going on.
Let's hope he gets replaced with a decent director.

#1 - Agreed. Forster is not the director for World War Z. That, or he needs to seriously re-think the way he shoots action.

'disconnect' isn't like 'eagle eye' or 'the international,' it's more in the vein of 'traffic' with multiple storylines pounding home the point that today's existence (and human interaction for that matter) is being taken over by the blackberry, iPod, cell phone and computer.

I agree - I've been really excited for World War Z; the script is phenomenal. But, I did lose all hope when it was announced that Marc Forster was set to direct. And now, not only do we have him directing, but also putting it on hold? That sucks. Now we have to wait even longer for something that he might screw up anyway.

Yeah I agree with you guys this is good news, QOS's action was just horrible, shaky just bad and him doing a zombie movie would just make it worst. Hope it gets a good director.

This kinda blows for me. I hope they replace him with somebody else so I don't have to wait any longer. I too have World War Z blue balls. Maybe they could replace him with somebody super awesome. Like Bryan Singer or something. If Robert Rodriguez wasn't busy he might be my choice as long as he didn't go all Grindhouse and mix it all up.
