Alex is Headed to the Cannes Film Festival - Vive la France!
May 9, 2009
by Alex Billington
I've been dropping hints about this for a while, but this is the official announcement. I'm currently on my way to the airport to catch a flight to France, then a train to the French Riviera, where I'll be attending the world famous Cannes Film Festival. I'll be covering the full festival - May 13th to May 24th - and will be writing reviews and providing all the normal festival coverage (like I do at Sundance). Additionally, I'll be doing my very best to cover all the daily news, however with time difference (9 hours) and with the schedule at Cannes, updates might be a bit sporadic. If I'm late on getting something posted, now you know why!
This will be my very first year attending Cannes. I have been to France a few times before, but never to that part of the country. I'll be staying in the same place as my good friend Eric Lavallee of the indie film website IONCinema.com. He's a Cannes veteran, so he'll be showing me the ropes, and he's likely to often appear in my daily video updates. I'm bringing both my Flip camera and a SLR camera to try and give everyone a good sense of what it's like to be at this fest. You can at least expect the very best coverage that I'm able to provide, as long as there is internet available and I'm not stuck on yachts partying all night.
There are a lot of exciting films that I'm looking forward to on the line-up this year, like Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock, Park Chan-wook's Thirst, Johnnie To's Vengeance, Lars von Trier's Antichrist, Gasper Noe's Enter The Void and of course, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, and this time I'll be the first to bring you reviews and coverage straight from Cannes. It all begins on Wednesday this upcoming week!

Lucky boy! If you get a chance, jump on the train that runs parallel with the shoreline and check out all the small towns around that area - one of my fav places on earth… Antibes, Nice and Biot and of course Monaco which will be catering for the F1 which I've had the pleasure to enjoy a few times now.
Look forward to your reports Alex.

I'll be looking forward to your review of Up. I'm anxious to see if Pixar does it again or if they're going to go back a step from the achievements of Ratatouille and WALL-E.

I will be there with you in spirit my friend, like a big First Showing cloud in the sky. This year's lineup looks better than last year's when I went.
