Universal Set to Adapt Next Dark Horse Comic The Secret

The Secret

Universal, who has a first look deal with Dark Horse Comics, has optioned the comic book The Secret for adaptation, as reported by IESB today. The studio also has adaptations of Dark Horse's Emily the Strange and The Umbrella Academy in development as well. The Secret script is being written by Scott Milam, who is working on Bedlam for RKO and the recently announced Mother's Day remake. First published in 2007, The Secret is a "chilling coming-of-age mystery" about high schooler Tommy Morris. Is it a coincidence that all of the Universal projects in development based on Dark Horse comics are focused on teens? I think not.

Tonight is Tommy Morris's big chance: he's been invited to party with the social elite of Franklin High and maybe even hook up with the girl of his dreams. But when a prank call turns sour, Tommy gets much more than he bargained for. The comic is written by Dark Horse founder Mike Richardson and drawn by Eisner-nominated artist Jason Alexander. Nothing against Dark Horse, they're a great publisher, I'm just upset with Universal. Can't they find some better material to adapt? Well, they do have Scott Pilgrim in the works, and The Secret could actually be great, I just don't want to see more teenage-oriented comic book movies.

Haven't heard about this in a while. Glad to see they're taking the next step.
