Wow, I LOVE Fellini's 8 1/2 and I think Day-Lewis is the best of the best but WTF is this?! Should have been a straight up remake if anything cause this is just missing a note. I know I might get curious and see it on Blu but this is hard to swallow and I also thought Chicago was blah.

hate musicals as well, I didn't know it was a musical when I watched this and it looked amazing until, alas, the singing began… it could have probably been amazing if instead of singing all the dialogue they spoke it.

I don't think a musical can ever match the immersive and captivating potential that traditional films have. However, in order to be fantastic the rest of the film will have to succeed in every area and from the trailer it looks as though it will. Daniel Day-Lewis is one of Hollywood's most talented actors, and when you throw in the brilliant supporting cast comprised of Judi Dench, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, and Sophia Loren we may just have another Oscar nominated film.

The strongest thing that this film has going for it is the rock hard nature of its source material. '8 1/2' is easily one of the best films ever made, which puts the bar quite high for this reimagining.

#2 & #18 - It doesn't look like the same story, but it feels like the same kind of Rob Marshall musical, shot in a giant frickin' warehouse, with elaborate and pointless dances and lush lighting and everything. I mean, it's the SAME director as Chicago, obviously he's taking everything he did with that and just applying it to a different musical…

Definately gonna see this, although I also didn't like Chicago very much.
Agree with Alex though, it would suck if the focus was on choreography and not the acting.
But thats what most musicals are, after all.

Yeah, well, Alex - we all know you are a bit of a philistine when it comes to artsy films. For action films you are primo - but art not so.

@#4 - why do a remake of a perfectly wonderful film unless you are going to give it a new twist? But that twist has got to look at it in a new way and not change the meaning. Examples of musicals films that should never have been made are Hairspray and the Producers. But that's split milk.

As for being big and lush, well, yes it has Marshall written all over it. The original musical was set on a small plain bare stage with several boxes for props/furniture. The cast was the director and his loves. That was it. And it was done all in b&w. The simplicity of 8 1/2 was echoed in the musical. But this is over the top. With that said, I am still interested in seeing it. You can't go wrong with lusty Italians.

I love how defensive Alex gets…it's hilarious.

Don't know why so many people hate musicals. The musical genre has a long, rich, and successful history in Filmdom. And, since the source material for this musical (Fellini's 8 1/2) is about a film director's fantasized memories of his youth and present, adding music to his fantasies makes absolute sense. Who among you DOESN'T image a soundtrack to your life from time to time running in your head? I always have music playing in my own mind…keeps me sane.

It's Kidman's bit I'm most excited about (Penelope figures second in my book). I can't recall a cast as impressive as this in recent memory. Expect lots of razzle-dazzle (a given) and hope to see some hard-earned Oscar-caliber performances. My only worry is that Rob Marshall may either try to mimic Chicago or that he may turn in a movie that resembles Memoirs of a Geisha (punishment). Either way this looks very promising. And whooda thunk Fergie could acually sound so good?!

My partner made a good point - the editing in the dance numbers is going to be choppy. Just like in Chicago. Which is interesting for a choreographer cut up the dance sequences and not let the dancing speak for itself. I know it's a modern style for those with short attention spans, but the work of Fred Astaire was usually done all in one take. You would think that Marshall would like to show off his work, not hide behind editing.

This is a movie version of the Broadway MUSICAL NINE, not the movie 8 1/2. All these comments about preferring a non-musical remake are, well, ignorant of the source material. Try knowing what you're talking about before commenting. If you'd like to see a re-make of the MOVIE 81/2 - go ahead and try and make that…let me know how it goes?

Loved Chicago. I expect to love this, as well. Althought the original staging was bare, you can't put basic props up on a screen and expect the audience to follow. Bring on the over-the-top Marshall treatment, I say!

I saw the film 8 1/2 in 1963 when I was 15 year old and thought it fascinating and amazing.

I saw the Broadway show of Nine in the '80's with Raul Julia and loved it. It became one of my favorite musicals.

I saw the revival production of Nine on Broadway a few years ago with Antonio Bandares. It was a very different production from the 80's version but amazing and I loved it.

Nine is cemented as one of my favorite musicals.

I was a bit skeptical of the film having see what how disappointing Hollywood treatments have been in the past of many Broadway shows. I thought Marshall did a superb job with Chicago—in fact I enjoyed the film more than the stage show. If this preview is any indication of what he did with Nine then we are all going to be blown away again. He seems to have captured the best of the musical stage show and made much of his film mimic the look of 8 1/2.

And to those think this is a remake of 8 1/2 then they haven't a clue. It's not. It's a movie version of a Broadway show…a show that won the Tony for Best Musical in the 80's and as Best Musical Revival a few years back.

I can't wait to see this show.

oh and this is all what you need to do to make a stage musical into a movie musical
if you don't want the editing and big sets record the stage show if not sit on your thumbs and shut up.

btw if you're only interested in daniel day lewis because of his previous work don't see this if you don't think you'll like it chances are you won't and that'll just make you not want to like daniel anymore, I'm personally not a huge fan of his but i might be after this.

personally i think this looks like one of the best musical movies i've seen in a while and since i liked chicago and the producers and phantom and others i expect to enjoy this very much and probably by it when it comes out on dvd

Everybody.. Sean Harrington had it right - this is a film version of the M-U-S-I-C-A-L. If you don't like them, no one wants to hear your remarks anyway because you can't offer an informed opinion of the genre.

What I do think is interesting is the inclusion of Kate Hudson. Good for her. Back in day of the early attempts to make "Chicago" into a film, Liza Minnelli and Goldie Hawn were on tap to star in the film. Both in their prime. THAT I would have liked to see.

#1 music billboard hit last month cant hurt. Timing with her right now seems perfect for this movie to be released.
