Dustin Lance Black Directing What's Wrong With Virginia
May 18, 2009
by Alex Billington
Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (who wrote Gus Van Sant's Milk) will be making his directorial debut with a film called What's Wrong With Virginia. Variety has announced that Liam Neeson and Jennifer Connelly will star in drama. The script, also written by Lance Black, sees Connelly playing a charming but psychologically disturbed mother of a 16-year-old son. Her 20-year clandestine love with a sheriff (Neeson), who is running for the state senate, is tested when her son begins a relationship with his daughter. Shooting will start in Holland, MI in late summer, with Tick Tock Studios financing.
Dustin Lance Black is also working on developing The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test with Gus Van Sant, but other than these two projects, he doesn't have anything publicly in the works yet. This actually sounds like a very interesting film and I've got to say he at least writes very well. I really loved Milk and I think he deserved the Oscar for it. Now it's just see if he can direct, as not all screenwriters can, like Robert Siegel, who's directorial debut Big Fan was an absolute mess. I'll be pulling for Lance Black though, and will be following this project. Hopefully it'll debut at Sundance or another fest next year - we'll let you know!

Having also been a fan of Milk, I am eager to see what Lance Black has in store for his next films. WWWV sounds interesting, and one can't go wrong with Connelly and Neeson, but I'm most intrigued by The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Van Sant and Black are perfect fits for this type of story, and I'm eager to see who will join the cast.

Sounds like Lone Star meets Chinatown … Not a fan of Milk, but Liam and Ms. Connelly are always solid.

Milk was a good movie and was really popular among San Francisco singles, specially among the gay and gay supporters.

I understand that all the beach and boardwalk scenes were filmed this summer in Wildwood, NJ but I guess they are going to depict it as Holland, MI. Can't wait to see the scenes of my favorite vacation spot.
