Enzo G. Castellari Planning a Caribbean Basterds Movie
May 19, 2009
by Alex Billington
Did you know that Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds is actually based on 1978 Italian war movie? Well, not really, we're kind of pulling your leg, but it's more than just mere coincidence that the titles of Enzo G. Castellari's Inglorious Bastards (pictured above) and Tarantino's new film are the same - it served as an inspiration for Tarantino's latest, and isn't a remake or re-imagining at all (the story is entirely different). After a successful re-release of the film on DVD last year, Enzo is now back in action, and is in Cannes selling his newest project (via Variety), titled Caribbean Basterds, about a few bastard kids.
The plot of Caribbean Basterds centers on a trio of young rich kids who rebel against their arms-dealing parents and also stumble across a big drug cache. It's set on a Venezuelan isle, hence the title. Apparently Enzo is pitching it as "action, action, action and lots of sex and drugs," adding that "there is lots of violence against rich folks, and the kids take advantage of the situation to have fun with a few orgies." Wow. And as for that title, ""Quentin's going to be surprised when he sees the title, and I'm going to say: 'You were inspired by my movie, but I just copied from yours with no shame.'" Castellari is a jokester, too!
In addition to Tarantino providing inspiration, Enzo says it was actually Stanley Kubrick who provided the most inspiration for Caribbean Basterds. One of the three characters is a big Kubrick fan, so in their punitive missions they wear bowler hats, white uniforms, and wield metal batons. "It's a homage to Kubrick with various genuflections on my part," Castellari says. This actually sounds like a cool combination of inspirations and a fun little story - I'm sold! I have not see Castellari's Inglorious Bastards yet, though I do own the new DVD and plan to see it soon. And of course, we'll let you know how Tarantino's Basterds is.

I'm sorry, Alex. But, how in the world did you not hear about the original before, especially in your line of work.
Maybe it's because I am from Germany that I heard about this movie when I was still a kid, but if I am not completely mistaken, it has been a classic for a while.
And this poster was also what I first thought of when I saw the Tropic Thunder one.
Just saying… >.>
