Jonah Hill Promises 'Insane' R-Rated 21 Jump Street Movie

Sometime last year it was announced that Jonah Hill was in negotiations to write and executive produce an adaptation of the popular 80's TV show 21 Jump Street. The show starred Johnny Depp and Holly Robinson Peete, amongst others, and was a crime drama about an elite squad of young undercover cops. It seemed odd that Jonah Hill would be tackling this and even odder that it might become a comedy. In a recent interview with Hill over at Complex, though, he promises something a bit different. "We're not even spoofing the movie. It's not strictly comedic, either. We're doing a full-on action movie, blowing shit up."
So it's going to be somewhat of a comedy and somewhat of an action movie, or so it seems. Leave it up to Hill himself to give us a better description of what to expect. "[Sony execs said] they were gonna let me make my kind of movie—an R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type movie—and I told them the second they don't, I'm not gonna be involved anymore." And as far as we know, he's still involved. You know what, I'm not too opposed to that pitch, as I'm not a die-hard fan of the original show who is worried that it'll be screwed up with Jonah Hill on-board. At least he's not starring in it, as far as we know?
I'm not exactly a big fan of Jonah Hill, but I think this is one of the better projects he has in the works. I'm not sure if he's any good at writing, but we'll soon find out. Hell, all this talk about 21 Jump Street makes me want to pick up the box set and revisit Johnny Depp's golden years as Officer Tom Hanson. I really hope Sony lets Hill keep it R-rated and insane like he's pitching, as I'd love to see 21 Jump Street in that way.

I doubt Depp will be involved as he's way too old for the role now…besides, this is a reboot so that means new stars…

I idolized Johnny Depp as Hanson when I was a kid. I may be biased, but at least half of the episodes are still worth watching today, some 15 to 20 years later. While he isn't the funniest person in the business, I'm hopeful that Jonah Hill can pull off what he is selling. Hopefully he stands by his statement and as a result the film gets a hard R. It seems like a long shot.

As much as I hate Jonah Hill and wish he'd go away, this will probably work, too.
But I think you lose credibility when you start making movies out of TV shows, even if you're gonna be santimonious with them. Dukes of Hazzard, for example.

You know what, I like the sound of this. I say let Hill continue to play in his sandbox. I have no attachement to the series but if his movie is going to have insane action and comedy and will probably draw some big names to the cast, I can get behind it…at least long enough to see a kick-ass trailer.

Jonah Hill is a fat fuck and this will have nothing to do with the original other than the name. Unless you enjoy movies with lots of swearing that would give a 12-year-old a wet dream.
