Producer Dan Lin Talks About Lara Croft Origins Details

Back in January, Warner Brothers announced that they were bringing back Lara Croft in a reboot. But it wouldn't be anything like the Angelina Jolie movies from 2001 and 2003. "The new project is expected to revamp the character and her mission and bear little resemblance to the original pictures. It will reimagine the origins of the character, her love interest and the main villain." So in essence, it's an origin story, meaning a younger Lara Croft. About.com caught up with producer Dan Lin recently on the red carpet of Terminator Salvation and got an update and more details about where this reboot is headed.
"It's a great origin story that we're going to tell, a very character oriented. I would say, more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies," Lin says. When asked if it'll be "full-on action" like previously, Lin said otherwise. "It's not full-on action, I would say it's like Terminator, it's character-driven action. I think for me, the Lara Croft games and movies have gone a little too action oriented. I wanted to have action, but with character." Lin also says they're going with a younger actor, since it is the origins of Croft. I expect this means someone in their early 20's, like Megan Fox or Olivia Wilde, so expect casting by the end of the year.
I'm not necessarily looking forward to this yet, but once they find a writer, director, and actress, I may change my mind. It has potential, but it's too early to tell. What do fans think of the origin aspect?

first to comment !!!
I think Lin is smart, true said, nowadays action is like…dude give me a break.
back in the days it was action driven by the character, so hopefully the actress
could act better and make the audience feel connected

I think it's pathetic how hollywood is so barren of ideas, that all that is done now is reboots and remakes of concepts from the 70's/80's……

personally, I really enjoyed both Tomb Raider movies and don't know why they don't just complete a triliogy with Angelina Jolie. I guess I'm the only one who feels that way?

Just get a good director on board and it will be watchable. No Simon Wests, please or that german guy who did the sequel, forget his name, the guy who was the DP on Die Hard…

I think Rhona Mitra would be the perfect Lara Croft. Although, I'm not sure if she would be considered young enough for an origins movie.

A reboot? So soon? Also known as: "We want to make some Tomb-Raider movies to earn Tomb-Raider money but without paying an Angelina-Jolie salary"
Next thing you know, they'll be remaking Benjamin Button next year…

i think this could be interesting,
i liked the other two tomb raider films but theres definately room for improvement and a different approach,
as long as they find the right actress of course!!!

If not for all these reboots, Hollywood might be out of business now.
If you think having a new idea for a movie and making it profitable is easy, think again. Almost all the big time movies are adapted from something.

I love how the trend in hollywood now is, "Well the first movie(s) sucked, so we decided to start over and try not to suck this time and make it nothing like the originals. So just pretend they don't exist."

@2: The original Tomb Raider movies were not from the 70's/80's……
I think it is a great idea to make an origins story for Lara Croft.

@ 11 - How about some videos? (See "Becoming Lara Croft" video linked to below…)
@ 16 - That's gymnast Alison Carroll: "the new face (and body) of Lara Croft." Alison was the model used for appearances promoting the video game Tomb Raider: Underworld
She would be sooooooo perfect for the new Lara Croft origins movie!

They could make it an annual thing. Reboot the previous year's movies. Hollywood is a creative desert.

I think there is nothing wrong with remakes!
Its always good to see another persons perspective on a franchise espeically if the original didn't use the source material to its full potential,
for example it would have really sucked to never see the Hulk on screen again just because the 2003 version didn't go down so well.
I'd rather a remake anyday than for characters to dissapear off the screen for good!!!

I think that having a new Lara Croft movie is a great idea. But I WILL NOT go to see it if Angelina Jolie doesn't play Lara. I really enjoyed watching her in the other two movies. To me it is not a Lara Croft movie if she doesn't play in it. I also don't like the idea of Megan Fox playing Lara Croft, she might be ok in Transformers, but not as Lara Croft. At thirty-four, Angelina Jolie is not very old and looks great for her age. There is absolutely NO reason she can't play Lara Croft! Finally, I would personally like to see a third Lara Croft instead of an origins movie (do we really need to know about her past? I'd rather know what will happen next, not what already happened). But if they don't want to make a third one than an origins would be ok; as long as Angelina is Lara.

@2- I totally agree with you. So your'e not alone. It would be best with Angelina Jolie as Lara.
