Tom Cruise is Doing a Comedy Next and Joins Wichita

Tom Cruise

Just a few months ago, no one knew what Tom Cruise would be starring in next. He had around seven different major roles to choose from, all with something unique to offer. However, Variety is reporting today that Cruise has decided to go with Wichita, the "action comedy" at 20th Century Fox that he will star in with Cameron Diaz. It came down to a choice between Motorcade and Wichita, and Cruise went with the latter. Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma director James Mangold will be helming Wichita, in which Cruise will play an undercover agent who gets thrown together with a single woman who has "man trouble."

The screenplay for Wichita was originally written by Dana Fox, then revised by Scott Frank. Mangold himself is tweaking the current draft with Laeta Kalogridis (of Shutter Island). Let's hope all of these revisions haven't watered down the screenplay. Fox is looking to get this out by summer of 2010. I'm wondering if Cruise and his agent took into account all the positive buzz that came from Tropic Thunder, as this is a comedy and Motorcade was just another action thriller. Here's to hoping he finds time to shoot David Cronenberg's The Matarese Circle before moving on to Wichita, as I'd love to see him in that, too.

Good. Cruise's future is in comedy's. I love a good Cruise comedy. His other ventures have been hit and miss at best lately. (imo)

The concept sucks but I like James Mangold so this might have promise.

Plus, if they were able to sign Cruise, I'm guessing this project has potential. Too bad Cameron Diaz is in it…

That alone makes me want to see this.

#3 agree 100%

Tom Cruise was the secret star of Tropic Thunder, imo (aside from R.D.Jr.). He was fucking hilarious, and I don't think anyone has ever seen him dance and curse like that, it was awesome.

Taking that roll was one of the smartest decisions he ever made. It blew him right back out of the water when everyone stopped taking him seriously after the whole Oprah debacle, and his weird scientology praises.

Maybe Tom Cruise is a bit looney toons in his head in his real life, but I still think he is a really good actor. I'm looking forward to see him in a comedy again.

Sounds like a good role for Tom to me. He almost stole the show from RDJ in "Tropic Thunder", and that's not easy to do! And he was great in "Valkyrie". Looking forward to this.

Abrams has been successful rebooting “Star Trek,” so I expect he’ll bring back “Mission: Impossible” from its low numbers on the third movie.
