Natalie Portman Joins David Gordon Green's Your Highness

Now this is great news! One of my favorite actresses, Natalie Portman, has joined the cast as the female lead in David Gordon Green's Your Highness. As a reminder, for those who may have forgotten, Your Highness is a medieval fantasy comedy starring Danny McBride and James Franco about a pot-smoking prince who is tasked with protecting his kingdom from mythical beasts, but who would really rather just hang out doing bong hits. This news was first announced by HitFix today and later confirmed by Variety. Gordon Green is currently scouting locations and preparing to shoot in Belfast, Ireland starting in July.
McBride will play the "arrogant lazy prince," while Franco will play his brother. Portman will play a warrior princess that the lazy prince falls in love with. In our interview with Gordon Green last year, he explained that it was "about a prince that smokes weed and fights dragons." And as for the mythical creatures, they won't be CGI. "There's a lot of creatures. No CG, like Ray Harryhausen. Stop motion stuff and then a lot of puppets and things." Word is that Land of the Lost director Brad Silberling and Guillermo del Toro have been working with Green to show him how they approach shooting special effects. And that Green and McBride are referencing films like Krull, Clash of the Titans and Yor: The Hunter from the Future.
McBride co-wrote the script with "Eastbound & Down" actor and writer Ben Best. While Franco was quite funny in David Gordon Green's Pineapple Express, apparently the cast for Your Highness is supposed to be full of fairly dramatic actors except for Danny McBride. "We talked a bit about how Green's casting the film, and it sounds like Green wants to use 'serious' actors to fill out the world, with Danny being the one overtly comic character in the film." We're still missing casting on a few major roles in Your Highness, but I expect those to be announced soon. This is a project I can't wait to see or hear more from! Sound awesome?

I can totally picture this! Sounds hilarious!
Having serious actors do comedy is even better! More tongue and cheek rather than being obvious with the comedy. Bring it!!

Whenever I think of Portman I know that all I want is for her to be in a stoner comedy and not some dramatic film where she can show of her acting skills. My prayers have been answered.

Sounds cool, though I'd still like to see her and Gordon tackle 'Suspiria'.

Hopefully this will be a return to when Fantasy was about fun, swashbuckling, anachronistic comedy, and derring-do.. and not the usual sad, epic, slow-mo, near-black-and-white style Jackson started in LOTR.
