First Short TV Spot for Harold Ramis' Year One

Year One TV Spot

I had to remind myself that technically the Super Bowl TV spot for this was a TV spot, meaning this isn't exactly the first one. But anyway, the very first 30-second short promo TV spot for Harold Ramis' Year One has debuted and can be seen below. I thought I'd give this summer comedy a little more love, as its been a while since we last mentioned it. Personally, I'm not looking forward to it, but maybe it'll surprise me in the end. I just think the humor looks really dumb, not even in a funny way, but just plain dumb. I'll still check it out, hoping for the best, as Ramis is a great director, or at least he was back in the day.

One Final Beautiful Look at Pixar's Up in Theaters Soon

One Final Beautiful Look at Pixar's Up

In honor of the release of Pixar's UP in just a few more weeks, Disney has unveiled one last batch of beautiful new photos from the movie. Not only do I want to take this opportunity to feature them, as they're just gorgeous, but I want to mention how much I absolutely loved this movie. I had the chance to see it (in 2D) before I left for Cannes, and out of everything I've seen recently, it's my absolute favorite. It's one of the most emotional movies I think Pixar has ever made and later turns into a fantastic adventure in the second half. Especially after seeing these photos below, you won't want to miss it, in theaters starting May 29th!

Universal Set to Adapt Next Dark Horse Comic The Secret

The Secret

Universal, who has a first look deal with Dark Horse Comics, has optioned the comic book The Secret for adaptation, as reported by IESB today. The studio also has adaptations of Dark Horse's Emily the Strange and The Umbrella Academy in development as well. The Secret script is being written by Scott Milam, who is working on Bedlam for RKO and the recently announced Mother's Day remake. First published in 2007, The Secret is a "chilling coming-of-age mystery" about high schooler Tommy Morris. Is it a coincidence that all of the Universal projects in development based on Dark Horse comics are focused on teens? I think not.

Aziz Ansari Calls for IMAX Boycott Due to Screen Size Issue

AMC Citywalk IMAX Cinemas

If you saw Star Trek in IMAX over the weekend, you helped the franchise reboot break the record for best opening in IMAX history. But if you saw the movie in IMAX at a Regal or AMC theater, you may have also been part of an "alleged scam," at least according to actor/comedian Aziz Ansari (seen in I Love You, Man and on NBC's Parks and Recreation). Ansari has posted a rant against these chains and their deceptive "IMAX" branding on his own blog, and he's calling for a boycott of all Regal and AMC cinemas, as well as all other IMAX locations. This is serious, and there is an internet-wide debate about it, so read on for more.

Fantastic Poster for Lee Daniels' Sundance Hit Precious

Fantastic Poster for Lee Daniels' Sundance Hit Precious

If you're scratching your head wondering what film Precious is - it was formerly know as Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire when it premiered at Sundance. No, not the superhero flick, but the one that won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. It's premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in the next few weeks as well, where I'm sure it'll gain even more acclaim. Our friends over at Cinematical have debuted the official poster for Precious and it's quite spectacular. It's designed in the same vein as the old school Hitchcock posters designed by Saul Bass, if you didn't already recognize. Check out the full poster below.

Kevin Eastman's Update on David Fincher's Heavy Metal

Heavy Metal

What the heck is going on with David Fincher's Heavy Metal movie? We keep hearing interesting reports - that its been shelved, new director - but there's no solid updates worth reporting. Last we heard, Paramount had ditched the project, but then Sony picked it up instead. Then I was told that it wasn't going to happen at all, but I didn't have confirmation, so I didn't dwell on it. Now today we finally have an update (via MovieWeb) from TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, who was one of the original directors rumored to be directing a segment for the film. In short, Eastman says to expect an official announcement in 30 days.

Philip K. Dick's 'Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said' Being Adapted

Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said

In addition to picking up the Terminator rights, The Halcyon Co. also bought the entire Philip K. Dick estate in 2007, meaning they can develop any adaptation of any of his work they want. Announced today at Cannes, co-founders and co-CEOs Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson will next adapt PKD's 1974 novel "Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said." Set in a futuristic, dystopian America following a second civil war that left the country in a police state, "Tears" is the story of a celebrity who wakes up after an assassination attempt to find no one has ever heard of him. No word on who will write or direct this yet.

First Production Photos from Gavin O'Connor's Warrior

Gavin O'Connor's Warrior

Last year during the Toronto Film Festival, we were the first to receive a scoop on Gavin O'Connor's next film, a mixed martial arts (MMA) drama titled Warrior. Earlier this year he announced the cast - Nick Nolte, Tom Hardy, and Joel Edgerton. And now the Post-Gazette has the first photos from the production, which is currently shooting in Pittsburgh. It's not really safe to make this comparison, but O'Connor is essentially trying to make an MMA version of Rocky. "I think there's an opportunity to tell a story in this world, and it's a world that has a lot of interest right now," producer Greg O'Connor told me last year.

First Look: Video Featurette for Clive Barker's Dread

Clive Barker's Dread

I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Clive Barker, but he's got some unique and creepy stories that usually translate well to the big screen (or at least, make for very interesting adaptations). Our friends over at Quiet Earth have dug up the first promo reel for Dread, the newest Clive Barker adaptation from Anthony DiBlasi. The film stars Jackson Rathbone and Shaun Evans and is about the idea of dread in life. This reminds me a bit of George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead, but I'm not sure if this will even be that good. Anyway, those who are fans of Clive Barker should definitely take a look, as it looks quite interesting.

Rachel Weisz to Play Hedy Lamarr in Biopic 'Face Value'

Hedy Lamarr - Rachel Weisz

Here's some news from Cannes. Rachel Weisz is "loosely attached" (courtesy of THR) to play the iconic actress Hedy Lamarr in a biopic on her eccentric life, particularly her less-publicized second career as a scientist. The indie project is called Face Value and is being directed by Amy Redford, Robert Redford's daughter who made her directing debut last year with The Guitar. Previously, Charlize Theron had been in the running for the role, but now it looks like Weisz will most likely get the gig in the end. The screenplay was written by Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries, Trade) and Gretchen Somerfeld (Interruptions).

Superstar Ensemble Cast for Garry Marshall's Valentine's Day

Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel

Now this is one hell of a cast! Producer, writer, actor, and director Garry Marshall has called in all of his friends for Valentine's Day, the latest romantic comedy that New Line is developing. Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper and Ashton Kutcher are in final negotiations to star in the movie, which has five slightly interconnecting stories playing out during a Valentine's Day in Los Angeles. There are still five more major roles that haven't been cast yet, either! New Line is developing this as a "more ambitious in scope and cast" mid-$30 million production.
