American Gladiators: The Movie is Coming - Not a Joke

American Gladiators

Are you ready for this? Johnny Ferraro, creator of the "American Gladiators" TV game show, is bringing a live-action adaptation of the property to the big screen. The film will be specifically based on the TV show that first aired in 1988 and has been on the air ever since then. Former Legendary Pictures chief marketing officer Scott Mednick is producing this new American Gladiators. The goal is to create an action story that takes place inside the world Ferraro has created. "I look forward to creating a compelling story that launches a whole new set of characters," Mednick said. Believe it or not, this is really happening.

Spike Jonze is Blogging About Where the Wild Things Are

We Love You So Blog

One of our favorite directors, Spike Jonze, has actually been blogging about his inspirations for Where the Wild Things Are, amongst other amusing ramblings. The blog can be found at WeLoveYouSo.com and apparently has been up for the last few weeks, although we only heard about it today (via Film Junk). Intro from the blog: "The film represents years of work from hundreds of different artists, writers, photographers, musicians, actors, and creators of all degrees. This place has been established to help shed some light on many of the small influences that have converged to make this massive project a reality."

Takashi Miike's Samurai Film 'Thirteen Assassins' Gets a Greenlight

Takashi Miike

Beloved cult Japanese director Takashi Miike has gotten the funding and producers needed to finally make Thirteen Assassins, his samurai film. Based on Eiichi Kudo's 1963 film of the same name, the film is set in the shogun era and follows 13 assassins who come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord. Producers Jeremy Thomas and Toshiaki Nakazawa are teaming up to fund and produce the project, both of whom have a glowing background. Nakazawa produced this year's foreign language film Oscar winner Departures, Thomas produced Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor, which also won Best Picture.

Exclusive: First Promo Posters from the Croisette at Cannes!

62nd Cannes Film Festival

My decision to fly out to France a few days early has paid off. Earlier today, I went down to explore the Croisette, the famous street where everything takes place during the Cannes Film Festival. It is traditional that all major and minor studios and distributors line the street with new posters and marketing material, not only to capture the interest of the thousands of cinephiles who have come to this city for the fest, but it's also (for the indie studios) an attempt to gain the attention of international distributors. Below we have the first exclusive photos of a few of these promo posters from both big and small releases!

Update on Preacher Movie - Sam Mendes Still Directing?

Preacher - Sam Mendes

Those of you who are fans of Vertigo's comic book Preacher know that there has been some good progress as of recent on an adaptation. Late last year it was announced that it was being adapted for Sam Mendes to eventually direct. And earlier this year, it was announced that John August was writing the script. When MTV got the chance to catch up with Mendes, they made sure to get an update on it. "[John's] doing pretty well. He's about halfway through [the screenplay]. There's a long way to go yet, but I'm very, very hopeful. I think it could be amazing." So, there's not much of an update yet, per se, but it's something.

Check This Out: Disney's Princess and the Frog Poster

Princess and the Frog Poster

In addition to the teaser trailer, Disney has also debuted the official poster for The Princess and the Frog today on Cinematical. I think the best words to describe this poster are: magical, mysterious, creepy (maybe?), and blue, very blue. It's also interesting to see that Disney is really trying to make this look like it's not hand drawn animation at all, because they're worried audiences don't want to see that anymore in this day and age of 3-D (which I think is bullshit anyway). I've got to say, I do really love the look of this, although it's not exactly my favorite poster of the year. Check it out below and let us know what you think!

The Weekly Moviegoer - An Appreciation for Projection Problems

Projection Booth

For most people, projection snafus are annoying. If the film breaks, if the sound system fails, or if the projector fails to start up at all at its scheduled time, audiences become irritated with the delay of their entertainment and, most of all, worried that the problem will not be remedied quickly, or at all. But for me, these occasional glitches and projectionist mistakes can be almost as enjoyable as the movie itself. Maybe it's just me, because I've been a projectionist, in addition to the many positions I've held at movie theaters, but I think it has more to do with my appreciation for how strangely people act in times of incongruity.

Ever Heard of The Open Road with Justin Timberlake?

Justin Timberlake in The Open Road

The reason why I'm asking that question in the title is because we all probably should have heard of this. Don't be worried, until today I didn't know much about The Open Road either, but I thought I'd introduce you to it. Anchor Bay just picked up the theatrical and home video rights to the "family dramady" written and directed by Michael Meredith (of Three Days of Rain previously). Jeff Bridges stars as a former baseball player, and Justin Timberlake as his estranged son. The two go on a road trip from Ohio to Houston to see Timberlake's mother, played by Mary Steenburgen, from which Bridges is also separated, in the hospital.

Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox is Now a Fox Searchlight Release

Fantastic Mr. Fox

So far we've only heard tidbits here and there (like this last month) about Wes Anderson's stop animation adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic Fantastic Mr. Fox. The film is a 20th Century Fox production, however, a test screening report on the Film Experience Blog (via SlashFilm) mentions specifically that a Fox Searchlight title card preceded that screening. The studio has been test screening this film quite a bit recently, and although almost all of the reports have been positive, they might've discovered that it still has that Wes Anderson feel and therefore would be better suited as a limited release through Searchlight.

Oh No, Call of Duty is Headed to the Big Screen, Too?

Call of Duty 4

Not another video game movie! And especially not an adaptation of one of the greatest video game franchises ever?! No major confirmation yet, but the Hollywood Reporter is hinting at the possibility. In a recent article about Activision's Guitar Hero being turned into a TV show were a few sentences about Call of Duty. "Discussions are under way to turn the World of Warcraft and Call of Duty video games into movies." That's all that was really side, with an insider apparently confirming that "they are being talked about for the big screen." We've known about that World of Warcraft movie for a while, but Call of Duty?

First Real Footage from Disney's Prince of Persia Movie!

Prince of Persia Footage

Even though we won't be seeing Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time this summer (as originally planned), we'll most likely at least have a good trailer to hold us over until next year. But our very first look at footage from this video game adaptation comes from an ABC special interview with Jerry Bruckheimer, as uploaded to YouTube (via SlashFilm) this weekend. We've heard plenty about this (and seen some photos), but this is our first look at any real footage and even I'm impressed. The scale of it looks pretty incredible and so far it looks great - the action, the style, everything. Can't wait to see the trailer!

Must Watch: Explosive Trailer for Gerard Butler's Gamer!

Gamer Trailer

Over the weekend, Lionsgate debuted the trailer for Gamer, the next movie from Crank creators Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Even though this was actually shot before Crank: High Voltage, it's coming out later. The trailer was originally launched on Xbox Live, which is why this version isn't the highest quality, but it's the best we could get (for now). Even though I already saw this movie and I don't think it's as great as it looks, this trailer is a must watch because everything about it is pretty much perfect. I love the music, I love all the action, they really figured out how to market this well, and it even makes me excited again.
