Cannes Interview: Agora Director Alejandro Amenábar

Alejandro Amenábar

When I stepped out of Agora at Cannes last week, I knew I needed to talk with director Alejandro Amenabar. While the performances were great, it was the production design and the directing that was really one of the best parts of Agora. I had so much to ask him regarding taking on such an ambitious project, how much research and work went into it, and more. Luckily I was given the chance to sit down with Amenabar for 15 or so minutes on the Croisette in Cannes to talk about Agora. Not only did we cover a lot of ground, but a special guests shows up at the very end to put a cap on it all. Watch and enjoy!

Disney Bringing Back Randal Kleiser's Flight of the Navigator

Flight of the Navigator

Another day, another remake. Disney is readying another launch of the sci-fi adventure movie Flight of the Navigator. The original film came out in 1986 and starred Joey Cramer as a boy who takes command over an alien spaceship and goes joyriding around the world. Disney has hired Wild Hogs screenwriter Brad Copeland to write the new script, but they haven't chosen a director yet. John Hyde, who executive produced the first one, will return in the same role this time as well. If this turns out anything like the Race to Witch Mountain remake (which was a classic Disney sci-fi from 1975 modernized), then I will be quite upset.

That Buffy the Vampire Slayer Rumor Was True - It's Happening!

Buffy the Vampire

It looks like those early rumors were all true - Buffy the Vampire Slayer is returning to the big screen. But bad news for almost all of the remaining fans - Joss Whedon isn't involved. The project, as announced by THR today, is not setup a studio but rather is being developed by Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment. They are working with the original movie's director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being called a relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel. Although we all know Whedon as the man behind Buffy, Kuzui has held onto the rights since the beginning when she first discovered his script.

Is This Our First Look at a Mech from Cameron's Avatar?

Avatar Powersuit?

By now, everyone knows that I'm incredibly excited for James Cameron's Avatar, and I don't think I'm the only one out there who is anymore. So when our friends over at MarketSaw sent over this exclusive spy photo of a Mech unit from Avatar, I couldn't help but get a bit giddy looking at it. But they've posted some inaccurate stories recently and have been sent fake content that ends up being disproved fairly quickly. So I'm cautiously optimistic this time, because this thing looks pretty damn cool, and I really want it to be real. It's just enough of a tease not to spoil anything, but make us all a bit more excited. Check it out below!

First Real Trailer for Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain

The Burning Plain Trailer

The first international trailer for the directorial debut of 21 Grams screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga has debuted. His film is called The Burning Plain, and similar to Babel, it's an ensemble piece about with a two-tiered storyline concerning a mother and daughter who try to form a bond again later in their lives. I've heard a considerable amount about this film - it played at the Venice, Toronto, Glasgow, and Seattle Film Festivals - but I still haven't ever seen it. I keep passing up opportunities because I've only ever heard mediocre things. But it will be out in theaters in September, so check out the trailer if you so desire.

Steve Coogan Working on a Alan Partridge Feature Film

Alan Partridge

I'm not from the UK and I'm not going to pretend that I know who Alan Partridge is, but I do know who Steve Coogan is. Coogan had a stellar year last year with a starring role in Hamlet 2 and a supporting role in Tropic Thunder, but he still hasn't worked into the Hollywood mainstream, which is a bit sad. Somewhat like Sacha Baron Cohen, over in the UK, Coogan plays a character named Alan Partridge, a sports presenter turned chat show host turned early morning DJ, that has become such a big hit, that Partridge has his own sitcom and talk show. Word on the street is that Coogan is working on an Alan Partridge feature film.

Cannes 2009 Final Video Blog #3 with Guest Eric Lavallee

Cannes 2009 Final Video Blog #3

So was it a great year at Cannes or not? What were my favorites? Throughout my entire trip here in France, my good friend Eric Lavallee of the indie site IONCinema.com was my wingman and guide. Not only is he from Montreal and speaks fluent French, but he's been to Cannes before. So as a wrap up to the fest, I sat down with Eric (in a movie theater) to talk about our favorite Cannes films, our impressions of the festival, and our thoughts on some particular picks. The good news is that Eric and I have vastly different tastes - he usually loves everything I hate. So this may be the most well-rounded Cannes wrap-up you'll ever find.

First On-Set Footage of Russell Brand's Get Him to the Greek

Russell Brand in Get Him to the Greek

Not that I was ever excited for this movie, but MTV has debuted some of the first rough footage from Get Him to the Greek. As a reminder, the movie is a spin-off of Forgetting Sarah Marshall focusing on the character of Aldous Snow as played by British sex-addict Russell Brand. It's written and directed again by Sarah Marshall's Nicholas Stoller and stars one hell of a eclectic comedy casting, including Jonah Hill, Rose Byrne, Elisabeth Moss, Katy Perry, and P. Diddy. We have no context regarding the scene in which we're shown, but it involves a night club in Las Vegas, that's as much as I can tell you. Check it all out below.

Exclusive: Amenabar Interested in Making More Astronomer Movies

Alejandro Amenabar

Now that the 2009 Cannes Film Festival has officially to an end, it's time to look forward to what's next from some of the filmmakers who walked the red carpet. While I don't expect Alejandro Amenabar's Agora to come out of the fest with a huge amount of buzz, it will eventually play well in US theaters (once it's bought) and should at least receive some acclaim for its stunning production design. I had the chance to speak with writer and director Alejandro Amenabar (seen above on set) last week - the full interview will be up tomorrow - and he mentioned some ideas for continuing on with more astronomer based movies.

Confused by Charlie Kaufman? Then Ask Charlie Kaufman!

Charlie Kaufman

Our good friends at Empire over in the UK published a really great feature a few weeks ago that we only recently had the chance to take a look at this weekend. It's called simply Charlie Kaufman On Charlie Kaufman and in it, they ask Kaufman himself to talk about his own movies (see, simple, eh?). He's notoriously tough to talk to - both because he doesn't do that many interviews and because he doesn't like to talk about the themes in his movies. Which is why this is such a great feature and why I'm excited to go through it. From Being John Malkovich to Adaptation to Synecdoche New York, Kaufman covers them all.

Michael Bay Boasts About ILM's Record Breaking Workload

Michael Bay

You just got to love Michael Bay. Even though he gets a lot of shit from people who hate his movies, he doesn't care one bit about any of it, and still puts out $200 million blockbusters every other summer that do end up entertaining millions worldwide anyway. So why am I mentioning this today? Because in the new LA Times interview with Bay, he touches on exactly that topic (and plenty more about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). Bay says: "Look, a lot of people think it's fun to hate on Michael Bay. There's a lot of poison on the Internet. People always try to knock someone who's had a ton of success in movies. Whatever."
