Cannes 2009 Review: Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank
This was one of the first films to kick off the festival, and the very last film I saw. Andrea Arnold's directing debut was in 2007 with the Scottish indie film Red Road and she returns to Cannes this year with her follow up Fish Tank. That title is just as obscure this time as well, and doesn't have much to do with the actual story, but that doesn't mean she's unable to still give us a glimpse at her true talent as an auteur and filmmaker. In a very well-made coming-of-age drama about a 15-year-old girl living in slum-like conditions in England, Arnold gives us, at least, one of the best performances of the year, on top of a great story.

Guillermo del Toro Predicts the Future of Filmmaking
I really love Guillermo del Toro. Not only is he a brilliant filmmaker, but he's got a lot to say about almost everything (especially filmmaking), and I just love hearing him talk. We haven't heard from him too much recently, obviously because he's down in New Zealand working on pre-production for The Hobbit. But the tech gurus over at Wired got a chance to talk with del Toro recently (initially about his new vampire novel The Strain) and that means they've got one of the most interesting interviews with GdT that you'll ever read. This time the focus is actually on filmmaking and where it's headed in the future. Read on!

Check This Out: Empire's Cryptic Canvas 50 Movie Painting
Tomorrow is Memorial Day so it's a rather slow news weekend. On top of that, I'm spending the next 36 hours traveling from Cannes to Paris back to Los Angeles since Cannes has wrapped up. So to keep you occupied on this lazy weekend, Empire has launched the Cryptic Canvas, a time-wasting movie game involving a painting that contains 50 movie references. It's a nod to a painting that was put out a few years ago containing rock band names (if anyone knows where I can find that, let me know). You'll get the idea once you take a closer look at the painting, although there are some instructions on the site anyway.

Cannes Film Festival Awards 2009 - Michael Haneke Wins!
The 62nd Cannes Film Festival has come to an end. To put the finishing touches on another great festival, this year's awards, including the coveted Palme d'Or, have been announced. The jury was lead by actress Isabelle Huppert and included members Asia Argento, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, James Gray, Hanif Kureishi, Chang-dong Lee, Shu Qi, Sharmila Tagore, and Robin Wright Penn. There were a lot of strong contenders in the competition category this year, but big winner this year is The White Ribbon. Also, Best Director is a huge letdown, as I absolutely hated that movie! Read on for the complete list of winners.

Bumblebee is King on this New Transformers 2 IMAX Poster
Although we've seen plenty of posters for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, there are always be more that we haven't seen. Collider has nabbed an IMAX poster for movie, featuring Bumblebee and not Optimus Prime. It looks a lot like the character posters that were revealed a month ago, but with a different pose. I'm wondering how the heck Bumblebee became the poster bot for Transformers and not Optimus Prime? Not that it's really a problem, I just think Optimus is the leader and should be featured. In fact, don't more people recognize Prime? Anyway, thanks to IMAX for debuting a different style of poster than before.

Worth Watching - May 24: French Cliffhanger-ish Vertige Trailer
Forget that Cliffhanger remake, just watch this instead! Here's the pitch for Vertige: A group of friends on vacation decide to venture onto a trail high up in the mountains that has been closed for repairs. The climb proves more perilous than planned, especially as they soon realize that they are not alone. The adventure turns into a nightmare. It's a modernized, French version of Cliffhanger, with some impressive camera work, but unimpressive characters. The trailer was discovered by ShockTillYouDrop and it looks like it could be fun. But are they being sabotaged or does their climbing gear just suck? Check out the trailer below.

Transformers 2 Viral Kicks Off - The Real Effing Deal!
Ah yes, finally some good viral updates! If there is one franchise ripe for good viral marketing (besides Terminator), it's Transformers. Lucky for us, Paramount is putting a small bit of effort into launching what could be a cool viral game for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Those who followed the viral for the first Transformers know that it all began when Michael Bay hid a password in the trailer. And it's no different here. Hidden in the latest full trailer for Transformers 2 was a website on the back of Sam's shirt (see below). That website has now officially launched and there seems to be a lot more going on as well.

Another Photo of Dev Patel as Zuko in The Last Airbender
This is specifically for all the fans of Nickelodeon's "Avatar: The Last Airbender" TV series out there. Another new photo of Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel in M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender movie has been discovered today. A few days ago we posted the first two official photos, one of Noah Ringer as the protagonist Aang, the other of Patel standing in fire. Thanks to the fan site LastAirbenderFilm.com for nabbing the photo (although original credit goes to SlashFilm). Patel plays the the evil prince Zuko, who leads the Fire Nation. The photo below is also our first glimpse at the Fire Nation armor in the movie.

First Official Trailer for Last Ride Starring Hugo Weaving
From Australia comes the first trailer for Glendyn Ivin's Last Ride, an indie drama starring Hugo Weaving and Tom Russell. In the film, Weaving plays a father who takes his son on the run after committing a crime and ends up trekking through the desert. This is one of the first times I've even heard of this movie, but it looks great and I can't wait to check it out, if it evers makes its way to America. I'm a huge fan of Hugo Weaving, to the point where I expect to love almost anything he's in, and this is the first small indie feature he's been in in a while. Thanks to our friends at Quiet Earth for digging up this trailer. Watch and enjoy!

Katee Sackhoff Wants to Play Typhoid Mary from Daredevil?
I know, I know, I hate these "she was seen with" rumors, too, but this one is far more legitimate than the Eva Longoria story from last year. Over on the blog for the Golden Apple comic book shop in Hollywood (where I buy all my comics from), they mention that "Battlestar Galactica" actress Katee Sackhoff stopped by their store looking for "all the Typhoid Mary comics we had and has hopes to get a part for a Marvel movie." Those familiar with Daredevil comics know that Typhoid Mary is one of his lovers and longtime foes. Could that Daredevil reboot that was rumored about last year actually be taking shape already?

Cannes 2009 Review: Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Where have you taken us this time Mr. Gilliam? In the latest film from one of the wackiest and most beloved filmmakers, we're given a somewhat psychedelic glimpse into his truly wonderful imagination. It's his best film in a decade, the very last film starring Heath Ledger, and the first starring role for model Lily Cole. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Gilliam (especially after Tideland), but I'm happy to say that I'm a fan again after watching The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Gilliam takes us on a whimsical journey through the streets of London with a story that may have some big flaws, but is still an experience to watch.

Nathan Johnson Talks About Scoring The Brothers Bloom
Those of you who have seen Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom (which is playing in theaters now) probably know how awesome the score in it is. It was composed by Nathan Johnson, Rian's cousin, and is one of my very favorite scores of the last few years. The moment I stepped out of Brothers Bloom in Toronto last year, I was dying to listen to it again over and over. The soundtrack was only recently released on iTunes but is more than worth the $9.99 price tag. Not only is it worth featuring today, but this is primarily about the fantastic interview that Dave Chen of the /FilmCast conducted with Nathan recently about the score.
