Tarantino Heading Back into the Editing Room with Basterds
Apparently the Cannes reaction wasn't good enough for Universal. Anne Thompson over at Variety published an update from Cannes a few days ago mentioning that Universal is urging Quentin Tarantino to make some changes to Inglourious Basterds before it officially hits theaters in late August. Tarantino has consistently worked with The Weinstein Company for most of his recent films, but Basterds was co-financed and co-produced by TWC and Universal, meaning that the studio has as much say as Harvey Weinstein this time around. And apparently they're not too happy with the feedback from Cannes.

Sam Raimi Addresses the Morbius Spider-Man 4 Rumors
Earlier in the year, director Sam Raimi let slip that he was a fan of the vampire villain Morbius from the Spider-Man comics. Everyone jumped on the news as a hint that Morbius might be a villain in Spider-Man 4, but we knew better than to jump to that conclusion this early on. Raimi was recently interviewed by CHUD and was pointlessly asked about the Morbius rumor yet again. "What? I don't now anything about that," Raimi said sarcastically at first. Instead of actually addressing the potential that we might see Morbius in Spider-Man 4, though, Raimi instead talked about why he likes vampires so much. Read on!

Cannes 2009 Review: Heitor Dhalia's Adrift
I think I stumbled across a big Cannes sleeper hit. From the beaches of Brazil comes Adrift, known as À Deriva in Portuguese, the third film from Brazilian director Heitor Dhalia. I'm going to say right up front - following in the footsteps of City of God director Fernando Meirelles, Dhalia is the next great Brazilian filmmaker on the verge of breaking out. Adrift is his calling card, a gorgeous family drama about a beautiful young girl (seen above) and her parents. It's not a masterpiece, but it is definitely one of the better films I've seen here that offers so much to fall in love with, whether it be the actors, cinematography, or story.

Ye Olde Robin Hood Spy Photos of the Sheriff's Men in Battle
I can't help it, but these photos are getting me into the medieval mood. Appearing in The Daily Mail (via SlashFilm) are a few new paparazzi spy shots from the set of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood showing some of the Sheriff of Notthingham's men in battle. They are currently shooting around England and have been since April. We already debuted the first photo of Russell Crowe as Robin Hood back in April, but these are the first new unofficial photos from the movie. Roughly 600 extras were cast to play the Sheriff's cronies. These aren't the best photos, but I'm starting to be reminded of Gladiator. Check out another full shot below!

First Look: Natalie Portman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Hesher
It's a slow news day and these aren't the best photos, but Hesher is a project I'm very excited for and I'm happy to see them anyway. Just Jared has some new paparazzi shots of Natalie Portman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in character on the set of Hesher, and an indie comedy from Spencer Susser. The story centers on a loser (Gordon-Levitt) who invades the life of an awkward 13-year-old boy living with his father (played by Rainn Wilson) and grandmother. Portman will play a supermarket worker for whom the kid (I'm assuming the 13-year-old one) falls for after she saves him from a bully. See two photos from the set below.

Check This Out: A Christmas Carol Behind-the-Scenes Video
Last week we debuted the first poster as well as the first clip from Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol. And while we still don't have a trailer yet, Disney has put out a behind-the-scenes production video as part of The Backlot Buzz TV show. For those who want to get a better look at some concept art from A Christmas Carol, start here. The video gives us a better sense of what the film will look and feel like, at least until we see the trailer. And there's also an interview with Jim Carrey talking about working on performance capture. It's a fun intro to Zemeckis' newest CGI feature, which I'm excited to see in November. Check it out below.

Filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky Returning With 'King Shot'
If you're familiar with the work of Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (Fando y Lis, El Topo, The Holy Mountain), you might wonder how he'd fit in with modern cinema. He's something of a relic, from a great time when someone like Luis Bunuel could regularly garner Oscar nominations, and when former Beatles (and their wives) had their hands in producing art films. Today, however, John Lennon is no longer around to champion Jodorowsky, and the shocking surrealist has lost his placement in between Bunuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini in terms of contemporary relevance. Now he's set to make his triumphant return.

Expect Some Surprises in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim
After reading through all of Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series of comic books earlier this year, I've become a devoted fan. There are currently 5 volumes available, but if you've read them, you know it hasn't reached its conclusion just yet. But don't worry, when the 6th one comes out, it won't be a spoiler for the movie. O'Malley writers on his twitter (via SlashFilm): "None of Vol 6 is in the movie. Note that I haven't finished writing it yet, but they're already making a movie. Their ending is their ending." It's a little tidbit of news that will appease fans of the comics and also gives me a chance to write another update on this.

Terrence Malick's Tree of Life Coming to Theaters This Year?
We've been hearing tidbits off and on for a while now about Terrence Malick's Tree of Life, which shot from February to July of last year and is presumably ready to go (or so we've heard). But its been almost a year since Malick wrapped and yet we still have no real details. As far as I know, the film doesn't have US distributor yet, but is listed for 2010 on IMDb. But could we actually see it this year? Might it also have some Oscar potential? ScreenDaily (via The Playlist) posted an article about the film selling internationally at Cannes recently and in it they mention that Tree Of Life is "due for release in the US later this year."

Bubble Gum's Bazooka Joe Headed to the Big Screen?!
You can't be serious? THR has officially announced that Michael Eisner (former Disney CEO before Dick Cook) is developing an adaptation of Bazooka Joe, the comic strip that comes with Bazooka bubble gum. Eisner has hired new college graduate and first-time writer Mark Hammer to write the script. Bazooka Joe has been a comic strip used to advertise the gum since the 1950s. The very young-looking Joe, who wears an eye patch for reasons never explained, has child-friendly misadventures, and is sometimes joined by a host of friends. Somehow I can't believe this makes for a good adaptation, but believe it or not it's happening.

First Look: M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender Movie
No more horror for M. Night Shyamalan (for now)! USA Today has debuted the first two photos from Shyamalan's next movie The Last Airbender, based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series. Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel can be seen in the photo above as the villain, a firebender named Zuko; while newcomer Noah Ringer, who got the role via a demo tape, can be seen below as the lead character Aang. Shyamalan has been shooting this for the last few months and it already has a lot of early buzz, even though it's not scheduled to hit theaters until June of next summer. Check out the first official photo below.

Cannes 2009 Review: Jim Carrey's I Love You Phillip Morris
What the heck is Jim Carrey doing in Cannes? Well, there's a sidebar selection of films, not officially part of the festival, but in the Directors' Fortnight. Since I missed seeing I Love You Phillip Morris at Sundance this year, I wanted to catch it while it was showing in Cannes - I'm glad I did. Not only was it a breath of fresh air to see an American indie film while at Cannes, but it was simply a great film. Screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa make their directing debut with Phillip Morris, a comedy based on a true story about two gay lovers who meet in prison that I could describe as Carrey's take on Catch Me If You Can.
