Michael Moore's New Documentary on Economics This Fall
Overture Films and Paramount Vantage have announced that the new documentary from Michael Moore will be released October 2nd this year. The as-yet-untitled film will explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore has described as "the biggest robbery in the history of this country" - the massive transfer of US taxpayer money to private financial institutions. Moore's last documentary, Sicko about our poor health care, was released on June 22nd back in 2007. Are you ready for more controversy from Moore this fall?

Must Watch: First Full Trailer for Bruce Willis' Surrogates
Disney has debuted the first official trailer for the new Bruce Willis sci-fi thriller Surrogates. Directed by former Terminator 3 director Jonathan Mostow, the movie is about a future where humans interact using surrogate robots while staying in the comfort of their homes. It's a very action-oriented popcorn flick and, to be honest, it doesn't look that great. It may have some good looking effects, but the action looks bad, or at least the scenes I've seen that they're hiding in the trailer were bad. This may just be a well edited trailer, but in the end I still don't think it will be good. Give it a shot and let us know what you think anyway.

New Writer Hired for Summit's Harry Houdini Action Movie
A few days ago, I mentioned that I'm always inherently interest in movies about magicians, and here's another one. Summit previously announced that they were adapting a biography of escape artist Harry Houdini, not to make a biopic but "rather an action thriller featuring a character who is part Indiana Jones and part Sherlock Holmes." Most people balked at that, but I decided to reserve any judgment until I knew more about it. IGN has learned that Catch Me If You Can and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull writer Jeff Nathanson will write the Houdini project for Summit, which could be very good news for the project.

Audiard's Un Prophete Acquired by Sony Pictures Classics
My favorite film of the fest has just been acquired. Sony Pictures Classics has nabbed the rights to Jacques Audiard's Un Prophete, which we debuted a teaser trailer for a few days ago. Not only did I give the film a glowing review, but critics in Cannes have been saying great things about it (see below). Apparently the price for the film was quite high, but SPC just decided to go for anyway. They can probably turn it into a big Oscar contender, at least in the Foreign Language Film category. Hopefully they set a release date for Audiard's Un Prophete sometime later this year, and not next year, as it has a lot of buzz at the moment.

Cannes 2009 Video Blog #2 with Guest Rodrigo Perez
It's time to catch up everyone again on all the latest from the 2009 Cannes Film Festival with another video blog. This time I sit down on the beach with Rodrigo Perez, who runs one of my favorite film blogs The Playlist, to talk about a few Cannes films, including Lars von Trier's Antichrist and Johnny To's Vengeance. Unfortunately, as we were recording at the American Pavilion, it was very noisy, and the audio isn't the greatest. Additionally, we recorded this right as the sun was setting, so by the end you can barely see either of us it's so dark. Apologies for the low quality on this video, but enjoy it if you can anyway!

More Photos from Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is set to debut in Cannes tomorrow morning and I couldn't be more excited. In preparation for its debut, we received a small batch of new photos from the film that haven't been seen yet. Before I left for Cannes, we featured four new photos, but these are even better than those. In addition to photos of Heath Ledger as Tony, there are shots of Christopher Plummer as Dr. Parnassus, Lily Cole as his daughter Valentina, Verne Troyer as his sidekick Percy, and a specia shot of Tom Waits as Mr. Nick. Check out the brand new photos below and stay tuned for our review tomorrow!

Sound Off: Terminator Salvation - What Did You Think?
Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Back in 2003 the Terminator franchise came to an apocalyptic end with Terminator 3 and no one thought it would ever return. But it did, in a big way, with Terminator Salvation. Is it any good? Has McG pulled off a great Terminator movie and brought back this franchise in style? Or is it too loud or too messy for your tastes? Is the story the best or the worst part? Do Christian Bale or Sam Worthington kick ass or not? And can this franchise survive without Arnold? Sound off below, leave your thoughts, and let us know what you thought of Terminator Salvation!

Danish Ole Bornedal to Helm Dean Koontz's The Husband
Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal is no stranger to Hollywood. Thirteen years ago he remade his own horror film Nightwatch for Dimension Films, and that same year he was a producer on Guillermo del Toro's Mimic. But he didn't stick around much after 1997, returning instead to Europe to make the multinational English-language feature I Am Dina and more Danish films like The Substitute. Now he's finally returning to American cinema for an adaptation of Dean Koontz's 2006 thriller novel The Husband (via Variety), the plot of which seems on the surface to be your everyday, run of the mill kidnap/ransom story (but isn't).

Four New Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince TV Spots
Every challenge, every sacrifice, and every moment, comes down to this. Warner Brothers has released a handful of new TV spots for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in hopes of making it the biggest movie of the summer. Depending on how well both Terminator and Transformers do, Harry Potter might have a chance. But besides its box office potential, this actually looks really, really good. It seems like they've really stepped up their game this time, improved the visual effects and CGI a lot, and improved the visual style. Since this is now David Yates' second Harry Potter movie, maybe he's figured everything out?

Jackass Chris Pontius to Join Sofia Coppola's Somewhere
This is definitely an odd casting choice. We heard about Sofia Coppola's new project Somewhere a few weeks ago, that's about a "bad-boy actor" who gets to re-examine his life after a surprise visit from his 11-year-old daughter. The bum of an actor in the film is camped out at the famous Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood, where this will be set and where it will shoot. Cast as the actor is Stephen Dorff and playing his daughter is Elle Fanning. But how about Dorff's best friend? Coppola has cast Jackass member Chris Pontius as the character Sammy. Will he play a goofball or a straight-edged guy? Only time will tell.

Zach Braff to Write, Direct, and Star in Swingles
Zach Braff is in negotiations to direct, rewrite and co-star in the comedy Swingles for Paramount. The project was first announced last year with Cameron Diaz already attached. The story, which is based on a Duncan Birmingham spec, centers on a bachelor who is dumped by his wingman and teams up with a sharp-tongued woman he can't stand in order to meet singles. Obviously the bachelor is Braff and the new "sharp-tongued woman" is Diaz. Kevin Misher (The Interpreter, Fighting, Public Enemies) is producing the project for Paramount. No word yet on when exactly it will go into production, but it's probably later this year

Happy Birthday Clip from Woody Allen's Whatever Works
In anticipation of the upcoming release of Woody Allen's Whatever Works, Sony Pictures Classics has debuted a new set of clips from the film. As everyone knows, I normally do not post clips, but because I loved Whatever Works and because this is more than just a standard clip (it's three strung together, as you'll see) I wanted to break my own rules to feature it today. If anything, it's a way of showing you more of Larry David as Boris Yellnikoff and how ridiculously quirky his character is in this movie. And this is all just the beginning, because it gets so much crazier in the actual movie, don't worry. Check out the clip below.
