Disney is Bringing Winnie the Pooh Back to Theaters

Hooray? Disney is moving forward on developing a new hand-drawn animated Winnie the Pooh movie that will play in theaters. The new movie is tentatively slated for release in spring of 2011 and will come some six years after Pooh's Heffalump Movie played in theaters and made a measly $18 million total. Pooh is the world's second-largest licensed character franchise behind Mickey Mouse, according to Disney, and a renewed focus on that property will include merchandise and books, which is part of the announcement planned for the Licensing International Expo this week. Will we get to see plenty more of Tigger, I hope?
Last night I polled my Twitter followers to see whether it was worth writing up this news about Pooh returning to the big screen or not. I got enough enthusiastic responses that I decided to write something up. Not much more is known about the production right now, but they did emphasize that it would be hand-drawn. Which makes me wonder if John Lasseter, who now works for Disney as their chief creative officer, will be behind this new version. And if so, would this be one of their other big returns to hand drawn animation after The Princess and the Frog this fall? We'll let you know when we have any more details.

It wouldn't hurt having them come back to the big screen. The kids will dig it. Honey sales will go up.

voice of piglet since the beginning of it all died not too long ago. He voiced his character for the last winnie the pooh production, which I think was piglets big movie.
Hopefully they find someone who at least sounds close to the way we remember.
A new Winnie the Pooh movie is fine, but I think they need to come out with a mickey mouse and gang movie for the theaters. It's time for Disney to bring back their marquee characters to the forefront.

…weak. That's like a new mickey mouse movie. I love disney, but they have a way of sometimes milking the nostalgia out of everything. Seriously, we're up to what, Lionking 3? Little mermaid 2? Aladdin 3?…
Stick with Pixar.

#3 - There's really never been an ACTUAL Mickey Mouse movie, it's always been theatrical shorts. There have been direct to DVD mickey movies, but never a theatrical. Also: Lion King only has two films, Little Mermaid has 3, and you were right with Aladdin.

I would love to see PIXAR do a disney ensemble movie. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy going on an adventure.

#4 Fair enough. What I pointed out was antecdotal for sure, but my point is that Disney milks the hell out of some our fav's, much in the same spirit of all of these reboots and remakes. I just want some originality and I would LOVE to see an ensamble flick (really like A Goofy movie) or a different take (ala pixar flick) on some original disney characters.
Oh btw, there is a lion king "2.5" from Pumbaa & Timon's point of view!
