Duncan Jones to Helm 'Escape From The Deep' Adaptation

It only takes one good movie to prove how great you are - and that's the case with Duncan Jones. The filmmaker, whose father is rock legend David Bowie, broke out at Sundance this year with the sci-fi film Moon, which is set to finally hit theaters in just a few more weeks. While he's been talking about another sci-fi project in the same vein as Blade Runner, the Hollywood Reporter has announced that Jones is attached to direct a submarine project called Escape From The Deep. The screenplay is based on the novel of the same name and is being adapted by its author - British journalist and writer Alex Kershaw.
Escape From The Deep, subtitled "A Legendary Submarine and Her Courageous Crew," tells the story of a legendary WWII US navy submarine that sank after a torpedo malfunction, leaving the crew stranded on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Faced with drowning, nine men made it out alive after swimming the 180 feet to the surface without getting the bends. Jones describes the book as a "powerful story that will come alive on the big screen," which he hopes to turn into a "tense action movie." What I absolutely love about Jones is that he takes on big technical challenges - and I imagine that'll certainly be the case with this, too.

Cool news! And yea, talk about a challenge. Submarine films can easily look like they never left a junk-filled cheap studio, or worse, become waterworldish… hehe
It has been so much fun following Duncan's career. I got hooked into Moon's release reviews because we (husband and I) enjoy sci-fi. And now… well, my husband is a political scientist and has a considerable collection of war movies, especially WWII, so this will be especially interesting to follow. I'm still counting the days to see Moon, but so far he's bound to have an excellent track record.

I'd say in a couple of years you'll be rephrasing this as "Retired musician/actor/artist David Bowie, whose son is filmmaking legend Duncan Jones…"

Just of note, the book is factual and not a novel.
The experience of the men of the Tang is as real and harrowing as any story ever told and will hopefully be translated well to the screen. It definitely has potential and the book was rather good but I shudder to think that they could destroy it and create something as terrible as U-571.
