Jack Nicholson Replacing Bill Murray in James L. Brooks' Latest
June 2, 2009
by Alex Billington
We haven't heard too much about the new James L. Brooks movie in the works, but here's a casting update that will definitely cause a stir. THR is reporting that Jack Nicholson may step in to star in the role that Bill Murray had originally been in. Back in February we reported that Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd would star alongside of Reese Witherspoon. The project, which still doesn't have a title, is a romantic comedy where Witherspoon plays a professional softball player torn between two men, a "solid guy" played by Rudd and a charming ball player with a 94-mile an hour fastball played by Wilson. Sound any good?
Nicholson, who has been looking to star in something new, will apparently play the role of "the father," but that's all that we know about his character. The project, in development at Columbia Pictures, is due to start shooting later in June on the East Coast. Brooks last directed Spanglish in 2004 as well as As Good as It Gets, Broadcast News, and Terms of Endearment before that. Not only is Brooks directing, but he wrote the screenplay and is producing. As much as I love Bill Murray, this should be quite interesting to see with Nicholson, who last worked with Brooks on As Good as It Gets in 1997. We'll be following this closely!

Sounds like a solid TNT movie. Isn't Paul Rudd sick of playing the solid guy?

It should be good because it's Brooks and Paul Rudd wouldn't choose something shitty to work on, hopefully. I don't know I would have to see more.

Paul Rudd has made some bad movies, Over Her Dead Body being the most recent.
