A.R. Rahman Scoring Peter Billingsley's Couples Retreat
June 5, 2009
by Alex Billington
Now this is an odd choice, but very interesting, to say the least! Oscar winning composer A.R. Rahman (just think of "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire) will be scoring Couples Retreat, the upcoming comedy from Peter Billingsley starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and Faizon Love. I first heard this rumor on The Playlist, but Universal has confirmed with me that it's accurate. This is Rahman's first foray into composing music for an American comedy. I'm exactly not sure how a Rahman score will fit into this, but I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.
For those who forgot what Couples Retreat is about, we featured a full cast photo last year, and have a new synopsis for it today as well. Based on an original idea of Vaughn's, the comedy follows four Midwestern couples who embark on a journey to a tropical island resort. While one of the couples (Bateman and Bell) is there to work on their marriage, the other three set out to jet ski, spa and enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon discover that participation in the resort's couples therapy is not optional. Suddenly, their group-rate vacation comes at a price. What follows is a hilarious look at real world problems faced by all couples.
Everyone is naturally making a Forgetting Sarah Marshall comparison, based on the location and story. The score for that was written by Lyle Workman, a Judd Apatow regular, although the soundtrack featured quite a few songs from The Coconutz. I'm sure there will be a good selection of regular songs in this as well, but I'll be listening for Rahman's score. Universal has set an October 9th release for Couples Retreat.

What the hell? I have liked a lot of Rahman's work (Dil Se especially), but why this? Anything but a romantic comedy to break into the US market…

@ alex, if you've heard the soundtracks for Roja(his debut score) you'll definitely find its not odd. This is exciting! Go A.R.

A.R Rehman is a very unusual composer and he doesn't let anybody change his compositions. Back in India, he is quite good with scoring but one can't bet that he'll do a mindblowing job with a romantic comedy. Let's wait and hear it with our own ears.

Usually when you hear ARR music first time, you may not feel that great. but after couple of time it amazes you! He makes wonderful score for any situation, thats his specialty.

anything with Vince Vaughn is usually garbage. one must listen to "bombay theme" from a 1995 movie which first gave AR Rehman national recognition and you will see what a phenomenally talented music composer he really is. i still believe Slumdog millionarie winning over Hans Zimmer was an abomination.
this is a step down for A R Rehman

A.R. Rahman is a talented composer. Check out his score for Dil Se, it's hauntingly phenomenal. His score for Slumdog Millionaire was good but lacked coherency. Definetely an interesting choice getting him as a composer but it's sad that the movie will undoubtedly suck.

Dear Alex,
I just had the glimpse of rehman's compositions in couples retreat on official website.
Rehman is now synonymous with Experimentation, creativity and constantly grasping new genres and sounds.
I am sure hollywood would have never heard such music before… Here comes Rehman!!

95% of the indian movies are Romantic Comedy genre. Its almost like ARR's home field. I am sure his music would be mind blowing. Let us see whether he can enthrall hollywood movie buffs.

I've just got a chance to listen all the soundtracks from Couples Retreat composed by AR Rahman, it’s simply mind blowing…all the songs are phenomenal. I personally feel, it’s a musical blend of Indian and western sounds, but at the same time I hope the music is very universal and balanced. Great Work AR Rahman, Hope Hollywood like your music..
