Wes Craven Confirms the New Scream Trilogy Rumors

Is this good news or bad news, I don't really know? Last week we ran a rumor that said both Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette would be returning for Scream 4. Not only that, but also that screenwriter Kevin Williamson was writing a completely new trilogy that would continue the franchise with more sequels and not reboot it. Over the weekend, Digital Spy caught up with Wes Craven, the creator and director of the original three Scream movies. He was asked not only to confirm the rumor about the Arquettes, but also to give an update on the status as well, with a hint at the possibility of directing them.
Craven was asked if it's a reboot and promptly shot down that rumor. "I don't think it's a reboot and Kevin [Williamson], when he talked to me, said, 'Remember, it's not just Scream 4, it's Scream 5 and 6.' So I guess he has a trilogy in mind." That confirms the trilogy aspect that we'd heard about. What about the Arquettes? "I've been told, and I don't think they'll mind if I say this, the deals on David Arquette and Courteney are virtually set. I believe everybody else will be new." So no Neve Campbell? Doesn't look like it. And lastly, what exactly is the status of these sequels, and could Craven come back to direct any of them?
"Bob Weinstein (The Weinstein Company co-chairman) has talked to me, he's interested in me directing it. I had a brief conversation with Kevin [Williamson], I know that Kevin is writing. What I've said to Bob is I'm not closed to it, I'm not open to it, I'll be perfectly happy to read a script and tell him what I think. That's where it's at and I'm not expecting a script until August. I don't know what the premise is or anything."
I think Wes Craven is one of the few directors who haven't completely lost their touch in recent years (I'm looking at you, Francis Ford Coppola). But would it be good for him to come back? To be honest, I'd like to see someone new give their fresh take on this franchise. Craven did bring us three great Scream movies back in the 90's, there's no need for him to come back again, unless he really thinks he can bring something new to the table again. I'm looking forward to seeing his new franchise he directed called 25/8 and would prefer he just stick with that. Only time will tell of the script(s) that Williamson puts together is any good.

i personally not gonna watch it if they dont change the cast. i like the orginal trilogy, but it jst doesnt feel right using the same actors

I don't think the franchise can ever be as successful as it was, but horror movies are getting dull and Scream was one of those movie with a story, I'm just not sure if they can continue it.

Well, a sequel is better than a remake at least. And I'd rather see Craven direct it than somebody else. I'd like him to tell completely new stories rather than continue his old franchises, but I'd just be happy to see him stay busy and productive. If only John Carpenter could get the green light for one of his projects - it's been too long!

A whole new trilogy of sequels! That would be really hard after Scream 3 so sloppily "wrapped everything up". How are they going to do this without Neve? She didn't necessarily make the original movies, but her protagonist was vital to the series. I would give a new trilogy a shot as long as it's fresh and scary with strong characters. I don't want a lame slasher movie. I want to care when someone dies and be excited to see what happens next. Don't just throw together a ghostface killer with a scary voice killing people…

I am not so sure about these plans for the scream trilogy. They were real popular about 10 years ago but they may actually sell in this type of environment.
