Don't Watch: Trailer for Old Dogs with Travolta and Williams
June 11, 2009
Source: MSN
by Alex Billington
Disney has debuted the trailer for Old Dogs today on MSN. From the director of Wild Hogs (which is already a bad sign) comes a new comedy starring John Travolta and Robin Williams. I hate to say it, but this is really one of the worst looking movies this entire year. I don't know how anyone thinks this stupid physical comedy is even funny anymore. Maybe this would've got a few laughs out of me in 1994, but nowadays, it really is just painful to watch. Old Dogs looks like one big contrived, unfunny piece of crap comedy that I know I definitely won't be seeing. I never saw Wild Hogs and I don't plan on seeing this.
Watch the first trailer for Old Dogs:
You can also watch the trailer for Old Dogs in High Definition on MSN
Two friends find their lives turned upside down when strange circumstances lead to them being placed in the care of 7-year-old twins. Starring John Travolta, Robin Williams, Kelly Preston, and Lori Loughlin.
Old Dogs is directed by Walt Becker, of Van Wilder and Wild Hogs previously. The screenplay was co-written by David Diamond and David Weissman, of The Family Man, Evolution, and the upcoming When in Rome. Disney will be debuting Old Dogs in theaters Thanksgiving week starting on November 25th.

I don't know how you can say "From the director of Wild Hogs (which is already a bad sign)" at the beginning and then end with "I never saw Wild Hogs ".
Personally I thought Wild Hogs was hilarious. Not because of the script or premise, which were very generic, but because of how talented and funny the 4 leads were. This will be the same thing. Generic comedy made great by two very funny leads. I'll see it.

ok.
not a great movie, if I see it, it will be probably at home, with a borrowed or rented DVD with no efforts at all to go after this. wich means that it's a bit of an exageration to be so harsh on it, I don't think it's great but just from my personal taste, but for its target audience it looks like a fairly competent work, it looks to me that people into this kind of movie will like a lot it a lot, so there you go. I agree with you that it looks stupid and it's fair enough to express your opinion in a place that you own, but the "Don't Watch" and "stupid physical comedy" bits were totally unnecessary, first because that's not why you don't like it that people don't have to see it, and physical comedy is not stupid, it's kind of immortal, it's impossible not to laugh at someone getting hurt in a light accidentally way, it's just a matter of doing it right. this movie is not a great example, but it's not a fiasco, I think it works. it's just a matter of thinking it straight and look at the whole picture, everybody LOVED Ratatouille (myself included) and it's almost entirely physical, at least 85% percent of it.
just my opinion, tho'…you can write about anything you like since you own the place, but if I was you, would be a bit more careful about how to treat my opinions.
not a big deal, still a big fan, but it annoys me a bit to see stuff with not enough thought making generalizations and unnecessarily influencing people that might not think the same way.

Now I love physical comedy! And this looks hilarious. Seth Green and Matt Dillon? yes please. Also I have noticed that most people are falling for the comedies about drugs and drinking and all that jazz and thats all good but sometimes we just need a gorilla holding a little man and a soccer ball in the face. This wont be the best comedy of the year but I dont doubt that I will laugh throughout the movie.

Perhaps I should just stop reading the "Must Watch:" and "Don't Watch:", because more often than not it's completely wrong. I don't think this will be a fantastic movie, but to give it a description like that when you didn't even see Wild Hogs just puzzles me.
And with no doubt in my mind within a week we'll see another "Must Watch:" claiming it's the indie jewel of the year which will more likely than not bore the hell out of me. I use to agree with many of your descriptions of movies but lately you've skewed in the complete opposite direction.

Bernie Mac? Say what!?! Never the less, I'll see it. Maybe not in theaters but it looks decently funny. Better than the standard Seth Rogen and Will Ferrel shit lately.

Alex… dude… relax and smoke a fatty! It's an overdone concept… yes… it will be silly… yes but take it for what it is… a cheap silly entertaining flick with some laughs. Not everything has to be a 40 Year Old Virgin, Bruce Almighty, Zach n Miri (personal favs) or whatever type of flick that makes you laugh.
Come on the gorilla threating Seth to make him sing at the end. That's was funny.
Your a strange little man Alex. "I don't know how anyone thinks this stupid physical comedy is even funny anymore." Well thankfully everyone has their own personal preference and to each their own. Lighten up man! Life's to F'in serious to take entertainment so seriously.

I dont care what title you put on it, i'm still gonna watch it anyway. And if I like it, so be it. To be honest I only read firstshowing because they are on the ball with getting the latest scoop. I dont care much for opinions…
As for this trailer, I have and always lauded Robin Williams, and to see him do any film is a gift. Also grats to Travolta to doing a comedy (of all things) after losing his son RIP. Seth Green is a brilliant writer to be sure, but I've only ever appreciated his acting in The Italian Job. Matt Dillon of course has his niche in physical comedy, so an outrageous performance is expected. If there is only a photograph of Bernie Mac in this film I will still say he was typecast… AHAHA!

I'm sure you all, those who run this site, are very knowledgeable when it comes to movies….and yeah this is technically "your site" so you can say what you want. But your goal as a movie site should be to be objective. Posting this as a terrible comedy based on one preview that doesn't match your comedy sensibilities is in poor taste, akin to the type of slanted biased poor taste we see on news networks like FOX and MSNBC. So, do what you want, but if you want to avoid alienating half of your readers/viewers try to hold the pointless opinions for opinion columns (the movie sound offs are great!), and add a little bit more objectivity to what is essentially movie news.
Not every comedy can be a Judd Apatow comedy, or a Judd Apatow rip off. Family comedies are an entirely necessary part of Hollywood movie lineups….because, I know it's strange…but believe it or not some people don't like Apatow style comedy , and believe it or not some of us are getting burnt out on the Seth Rogan/Jonah Hill riffing
I can't think of many Robin Williams films, especially comedies that haven't been along these same lines of comedy….and I've found most of his films to be funny. In some ways he was the Seth Rogan of his day (Good Morning Vietnam!) so go ahead and knock him now because you'll be a hipocrite in a few years when you start knocking Apatow's crew when they've passed their prime.

i completely agree with alex. this film looks like absolute shit.
just because you (generally speaking) personally are interested in it after viewing the trailer, why would you feel the need to criticize or insult alex? he shared his opinion on the trailer, simple as that.
victoria on Jun 11, 2009
51
Alex,
you say from the Director of Wild Hogs is a bad sign, and yet you havent seen Wild Hogs. I didnt think the movie was anything specialy but, at least I watched.
Al on Jun 11, 2009
52
If you haven't seen Wild Hogs how can you talks about it, or the director, as if you know it's absolute crap? I saw it once and it was alright, but personally I'm still not a fan of the movie. But you know, enough people did like it for it to make over $168 million. Which goes to show that it hit the target audience it was going for. So sure, it might not be your cup of tea, but to say out right that it's crap without ever having seen it yourself is what is really 'stupid.'
That's the problem with people on the internet these days. Everyone thinks they're a movie critic, but no one realizes you actually have to SEE the movies to be credible at it. It's ok to post your opinion if you think something looks like it could be bad, but I constantly see people saying that a movie sucks and they have never even seen it themselves.

wild hogs was a piece of crap. This trailer looks moderately amusing bc im a fan of Green. The trailer seemed like if the guys from Wedding Crashers were old…what would happen? I take this from the football scene and the other tidbits of info given in the trailer.
This is my opinion and who cares what i think, but if you were amused then thats okay…its okay to have feelings

This is one of those movies you watch when nothing else is on. It's no different than other comedies like Without a Paddle or Roadtrip. Old Dogs seem to have some redeeming qualities but it's no Animal House.
However, for someone who runs their own movie information website I think you have to be careful how you phrase your opinion. To compare this to a movie you haven't seen seems like lazy reporting. You try and defend your stance in comment #48 by saying "this is "my site" and we're not trying to be a news network or any of that. I'm here to voice my opinion". I felt this was a news network and a very respectable one at that. Looks like I was wrong.

well I'll say this Travolta is an old player in this game, so is Williams…they have both done some
incredible films for instance Travolta: Grease, Pulp Fiction, and so on and so on. Williams: Patch
Adams, What Dreams May Come, and so on. This movie much like Wild Hogs is just a way for them
to have a good time, and make some quick cash and not try too hard.
xerxex on Jun 11, 2009

Now after viewing the trailer it completely validates my opinion, they're just looking to have a good
time! AND I SAY WHY NOT!!!!! This will be something to view on late Sunday after noons; or a week
day home sick. And yeah it no where near any potential of being great but okay, and thats okay!
xerxex on Jun 11, 2009

So yeah, you know, Wild Hogs - though not my kind of movie - was one of the biggest movies of that year over here… it ran for over three months. Old Dogs looks a whole hell of a lot funnier and Seth Greene is really funny in the trailer. I'm actually looking forward to it. This site is actually really funny if you don't take it seriously and read Billington's reviews/bulletins/opinions out loud with a conceited, whiney lisp. Try it!

Though this movie does not look good, there are far worse things to watch this year.
G.I. Joe for instance. Also, its summer and I love to mow in the nude. You can think of me doing this and then watch the above trailer and I promise, it will look like freaking Forest Gump

Everything is affected by personal opinion, whether you like it or not. And for the most part I try to keep things generally objective, but, as you said #38, this is "my site" and we're not trying to be a news network or any of that. I'm here to voice my opinion and you know what, I think this looks like shit. If you like it, and if you think it looks funny, great, more power to you, go tell the world, write plenty of comments about it.
Alex by this short and sweet comment you’ve proved what ive known for a while now that not only are you an egotistical nightmare but your also very childish too.
I think this looks funny and the trailer made me laugh so as far as im concerned it’s made it half way in my book. The rest we shall see when I go and see this at the flicks.
Let’s also see if Alex leaves my comment on this time as he always deletes them when he doesn’t agree.
