Producer Joe Gatta Updates Rodriguez' Red Sonja Movie

"She's beautiful and sexy, and she kicks ass!" That's one way you could describe Red Sonja. I remember back to last year's Comic-Con - Robert Rodriguez and his girlfriend Rose McGowan showed up to talk about their new Red Sonja project. Now its been nearly a year and we haven't heard anything. Well, except that the Conan movie is moving forward with Marcus Nispel at the helm, instead. So what about Red Sonja? Well, over at Empire (via Coventry Telegraph) they finally caught up with executive producer Joe Gatta who has been the central voice for all things Robert E. Howard who said that its been delayed until at least 2010.
"Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit. It's frustrating because we thought we'd make the movie last year, before Conan," Gatta told Empire. Back in May, Gatta was quoted saying that "the emphasis is on Conan [rather than Red Sonja]." However, he is apparently now confident that Red Sonja will start shooting sometime in 2010 and also confirms that it will be an origin story that ignores the previous movie and will be based on the Marvel heroine created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in 1973. Which also means they're not going all the way back to Robert E. Howard's work.
So although its been delayed for a long while, Gatta is confident that everything seems to be getting on the right track once again. "You have to be really careful so it's not campy. You want to make it real. Make her convincingly tough. And I think we have a script that's cracked it." According to IMDb, that script was written by David N. White of Undisputed 2 previously. As announced last year, Robert Rodriguez' long-time friend and co-worker Doug Aarniokoski will be directing, while Rodriguez will only be producing. We'll let you know when we hear any more news on this Red Sonja movie - and if they show up at Comic-Con again.

They should make a Heavenly Sword movie instead.

Seriously want to know… Did anybody ever see the Brigitte Nielsen film? I just viewed the trailer for it and it looks absolutely ridiculous; so of course they are "ignoring the previous film". What do fans of the comic think of Rose McGowan playing the title role? I'm of the opinion, at this point, that a studio wouldn't even consider making this, without someone like Rodriguez' name attached as producer / advisor to the director.

Damn it Alex, I almost got a heart attack thinking it would be a trailer to Red Sonja as soon as I saw the pic. Nice update though, keeping my eyes open for this movie.

the only female ever to be convincingly tough in this type of role was Sandahl Bergman as Valeria in the first Conan movie…anything short of that performance just wont do…hope this gal has the right stuff to pull it off…

This article falsely states: Which also means they're not going all the way back to Robert E. Howard's work.
They *can't* go back to Robert E Howard's work because REH did *not* create Red Sonja!! This Sonja was created by Roy Thomas, and was inspired by a character called "Sonya" in a single REH story.
