Visual Effects Supervisor Charles Gibson Directing The Goblin

Charles Gibson

Oscar winning visual effects supervisor and second-unit director Charles Gibson (seen above) will make his big screen directing debut with the family comedy The Goblin. The project is being developed by Daddy Day Care producer Matt Berenson, Wind Dancer Films principal Matt Williams, and production head Judd Payne. The script, written by Geoff Rodkey (Daddy Day Care, The Shaggy Dog, RV) revolves around a suburban family that moves into its new home only to find a "curmudgeonly" goblin who doesn't want them there. "It's about creating a goblin that will appeal to audiences of all ages," Williams explains.

Gibson won Oscars for the visual effects on Babe and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and worked as a second-unit director on Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Terminator Salvation most recently. At first, I thought this might be an interesting project, but after taking a closer look at the screenwriter and his past credits, I'm already expecting this to be pretty bad. It sounds like some kind of combination of The Spiderwick Chronicles and the upcoming Aliens in the Attic, and neither of those are really my type of movie by any means. Anyway, we'll still certainly let you know how The Goblin develops.

VFX Supervisors make the absolute worst directors usually. Find a good example of a great film directed by a VFX Supervisor.

vfx supervisors are great technicians and can solve massive problems. That said…directing is a a mix of a few things which does involve a technical part, but it is not the primary skill. If anything id give it a shot as a co-director at first and have a nice learning curve there first.

but…there's worst directors than vfx supervisors…spirit anyone? heh.

the less technical vfx skill a director knows about the better! then the creatives can go into problem solving mode - and get creative… but if a director is too savvy - they can be a pain in the ass - filling in the pre-ordained blanks of a multi-million dollar previz… YAWNNN
